A series of live of events in the Powerscourt Centre every Thursday from now until Christmas

LAUNCHES: THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 4th @ 6.30pm

w Paul Hourican, Emmet Scanlan and What the Good Thought performing live & aerial rope act Corde DeLisse

The Powerscourt Centre in the heart of Dublin city centre is set to become home to an eclectic series of free live events this autumn.

With monthly themes, POWERSCOURT OPEN makes the stunning surrounds of the Centre home to some of the most exciting sounds around every Thursday evening.

Kicking off in September with a series of special acoustic gigs which perfectly gauge the pulse of emerging talent in the Irish music scene, POWERCOURT OPEN will provide a new and elevated platform (in every sense of the word) for some acts on the cusp.

Proceedings begin with Paul Hourican on Thursday September 4TH at 6.30pm. Joining him on the bill will be Emmet Scanlan with his band What the Good Thought following by a stunning visual performance by spinning aerial rope act Corde De Lisse. Making this event a double celebration is the launch of the Farmers Market on Coppinger Row which will continue throughout the year every Thursday from 11.30am to 7.30pm

With debut albums released or in the pipeline. 5 star reviews, world acclaimed producers and a little help from Peter Buck from REM, all the acts playing POWERSCOURT OPEN this September provide a tantalising sonic array of the contemporary music scene.

POWERSCOURT OPEN continues in October with a focus on Opera before embracing family entertainment in the countdown to Christmas.

Paul Hourican's musical palette eloquently spans the spectrum from boldly convincing rock anthems that have been a likened to the likes of U2, The Doors, Coldplay and T-Rex to delicately heartfelt, magnificently crafted tunes the music world has compared to those of Damien Rice (whom Hourican has supported), Van Morrison, Ryan Adams, and David Gray.

The critics have unanimously proclaimed that Hourican is indeed that rare artist who posses such natural talent he can pull off the rock, folk, and even pop genres wholeheartedly and with undeniable conviction. 2008 saw the release of Hourican's debut album 'Let The Enemy In', released in Ireland this spring through Hourican's own record label Hurricane Records and with exclusive distribution from Warner Music Ireland.

It has been described by critics as 'unapologetically confident...exceptional' and 'Indestructible...as superb a debut as we've had', and has very much established Hourican as a musical force to be reckoned with.

With live performances promising authoritative, emotionally arresting, honest and soulful delivery of, as of yet, untouched gems, and every throaty syllable surrendering to and serving the song, not just the singer, Hourican is one not to be missed!

Formed in 2004, 'Emmet Scanlan & What the Good Thought' is a free-wheeling compendium of talent drawn from all over Europe and based in Galway. Boasting of Scots, Swedes and Italians all capably spearheaded by Emmet, they have graced the stage at such prestigious festivals as the Electric Picnic and Galway Arts Festival.

Emmet toured in America with Galways own Saw Doctors in the Summer of 2007 and in February of 2008 they were the only Irish act invited to perform at the 20th International Folk Alliance Music Conference in Memphis, Tennessee.

Their performance Powerscourt Open will include a sneak preview of what's in store on their debut album which is released this autumn.

Emmet Scanlan - Guitar/Vocals (Ireland)
Alan Preims - Percussion (Italy)
Peter Akerstrom - Classical Guitar/ Bass (Sweden)
Nicola Geddes - Cello (Scotland)

ORPHAN CODE

One of the most hotly tipped of the current crop of indie outfits around, OrphanCode drop by Powerscourt Open to preview some of the material off their forthcoming debut album which is produced by Ger McDonnell (The Cure, Manic Street Preachers).

Having just released their eagerly anticipated second single 'No Armour', Rob, Neil and Jay have traversed the US in recent years building up a devoted fanbase and recording an album with Barrett Martin from Seattle rockers The Screaming Trees.

OrphanCode even had the pleasure of having REM axeman Peter Buck laying down some licks with them.

Made in San Francisco and mixed in Studio Litho in Seattle, the boys peppered this adventures such as a free roof-top performance in up-state New York, sliding backwards down Red Rocks in Colorado in their van and trailor in the snow, (prayers were said) and having a film crew join them on all these adventures, and in typical rock fashion, even had a major illness whilst on the road…Pericarditis anyone?

THE HOT SPROCKETS

www.myspace.com/thehotsprockets

The career of this Dublin five-piece has unfolded with such intense speed that you'd swear you were experiencing their evolution via some advanced time-lapse technology. Exemplifying the 'hardest working band in show business' model, the past two years have seen these smart blues-rockers play over 200 gigs, with a number of high profile gigs in recent times (supporting "The View" at the Ambassador & "Republic of Loose" at the Academy). The band have also had coveted slots with "The Things", "Mighty Stef", "The Minutes", "the Kinetiks" and recently stole the show at the IMRO showcase 2008.

"Country Dirt", the bands debut EP is set for release in October. It has been described as "Blues-Rock' with a healthy dose of attitude" & "Its Country Dirt Dublin style, and it's pretty dang good".

"Solid Gold", a track from the EP is currently being used to front a large advertising campaign for the popular beverage 'Bulmers', which is being broadcast nationwide in Ireland. Their fast growing legion of fans and the imminent release of their debut Ep…2008 is set up for everyone to "Rock it like a Hot Sprocket!"

RED KID

www.redkid.info
www.myspace.com/redkidtheband

Powerscourt Open picks up on the current pulse of Irish music by welcoming Red Kid to its stunning setting. Boasting a 5 star Irish Times 'Album of the Week' for their debut album 'Rocket Ship', Red Kid could be forgiven for walking a bit tall and having a special stride in their step these days.

"Think in terms of Fratellis, Black Crows, Blur, The Beatles and The Raconteurs, throw in a healthy sense of humour and a strong streak of individuality, and you have a good idea of where Red Kid are coming from" is what the Times said and this is a good indication of what to expect from a band who have been working hard to crack the scene. Effortlessly swinging from rock to pop to punk, Red Kid have played key festivals such as Electric Picnic, Castle Palooza and Hard Working Class Heroes in their pursuit of fame, fortune and fans.

Awww, when I read this I thought it was going to be gigs in the gardens of Powerscourt House in Enniskerry. Now that would be cool. If the Ramones were still around they could do Pet Cemetery in the pet cemetery.
