On the cover of this month's JMI (Journal of Music in Ireland, May/June), this is a rare solo performance from The Jimmy Cake's keyboard player, promising a heavy slab of free improvisation.

In 1999, Smyth toured with New York free-jazz veteran Charles Gayle, and since then has played with such luminaries as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Keiji Haino, Barry Guy, Chris Corsano and Damo Suzuki, to name a few.

i'm going to this. i took a masterclass in improvisation and i'm curious to see just how good he is. wouldn't it be mad if paul was just makin' shit up on the spot instead of improvising properly? i wouldn't put it past him...
