Fri, September 12th
Cleere's Theatre,

Doors: 9:00pm

After a wee break, Problems at the Pancake House is set to take off with a sonic boom as we present a night of ROCK MUSIC on Friday 12th followed by a slightly more laid back night of electronica and guitar grooves on Sunday, 14th, both in Cleere's Theatre.

Friday sees a most exciting night of rock, post-rock, pre-rock, math-rock and geography-rock as Adebisi Shank return to launch their first album with support and goodwill from So Cow, a safe dry place and Enemies. Definitely not a night not to be missed.

Then on Sunday we present the blissed-out elctronica and acoustic stylings of Chequerboard, playing alongside Kilkenny's own guitar-based duo Jazz Panda. More info here: http://www.thumped.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=66181

Adebisi Shank finally return to Kilkenny after playing one of the most mind(and ear)-blowing sets seen at the Pancake House shows last April with Marvins Revolt. This time they return with a freshly recorded album in tow:

This Is The Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank
Adebisi_Album_Cover.jpg

Adebisi Shank were formed in August 2006. Mick (drums) and Lar (guitar) had been playing with dublin based rock outfit Terrordactyl and met Vin who was working on The Vinny Club at the time. They played some local shows and in early 2007 they self recorded and released their debut EP (with the help of a small DIY label called Armed Ambitions). This EP was toured extensively in Ireland through the year and in late 2007 the band ventured into the UK and mainland Europe, with label mates, Marvins Revolt to great response.

The band regrouped in 2008 to begin writing their debut album. This album was recorded in June by legendary Independent producer/musician, J. Robbins (Jawbox, Channels, Faraquet, Clutch). The album, entitled, “This is the album of a band called Adebisi Shank” will be released in Ireland on 11th September followed by a Europe wide release in mid October supported by a tour of the UK and France.

Adebisi have just returned from a tour of Japan to support their EP release on Japanese label, Parabolica and plan to return early next year in support of their debut album. The album will be released on new Irish independent label, The Richter Collective and is available for pre-order now from http://www.richtercollective.com.

"Very interesting, Adebisi Shank....very post-modern EP....Very Good" - Tom Dunne (Today FM)

"the imagination on show here, even at this early stage, is frightening." - Rough Trade Records (UK)

"Musically manages to skirt every cliché in the book and head out into the clear waters of genius." - InDublin magazine (4 Stars)

“Adebisi Shank are one of the most exciting live bands in Ireland right now” - Rock Sound [UK]

So Cow (Galway)

Due to unfortunate circumstances involving a broken-down car and the Galway country side, So Cow were unable to perform at the last PATPH show in August. However they finally make their Kilkenny debut on the night.

So Cow could be described as "lo-fi with notions". Recording his songs onto eight track cassette in a basement in a flood-prone area of Seoul, South Korea, he continues on a quest to meld the finest of classic indie-rock moves with a sprinkling of bullish audio experimentation. Experimentation borne of the fact that he remains oblivious to such odd and frightening terms as EQ, Compression and Frequencies, preferring instead to twist the knobs and see what happens. This "record and run" approach has spawned a monstrous number of recordings, each weirdly special and especially weird.

Enemies (Wicklow)

Enemies spawned from a solo bedroom project started by guitarist Eoin Whitfield(Kidd Blunt). After recording tracks over a period of a year, future members Lewis Jackson, Oisin McMahon Trench and Mark O’Brien proposed to start it as a full band project. In April 2007 Enemies were born. After producing a demo for their first song, Popular Records showed interest and wished to work with them on their debut release. Soon after Enemies began working on their debut EP, entitled Alpha Waves. This EP was released in March 2008 followed by many live shows around Ireland and was met with great success both locally and in Europe, The US and Japan.

Japanese interest began with record label Stiff Slack where the EP Alpha Waves has sold out twice. This has sparked wider interest with Japanese label Machu Picchu who will be re-releasing Alpha Waves in the near future. Through Machu Picchu, Enemies became friends with Japanese band TOE which has led to a proposed tour of Japan in summer of 2009. Still in relative infancy, Enemies have their sights set on the future and are currently working on their latest release: a 7” vinyl with accompanying DVD due in November 2008, to be released by the Richter Collective. Plans to follow this up with a full length for late 2009 are underway and there has been extensive interest from various labels worldwide.

a safe dry place
asdp-1.jpg

a safe dry place came about in 2004 when Neil, Niall and Stephen got together to make a band and play music. For the next two years they recorded sounds and hisses, noises and melodies. They played quite a few times with their friends in venues throughout the city. People seemed to like them and often compared them to Tortoise, Mogwai and Do Make Say Think.

And that was that.

The band went on a hiatus while the members busied themselves with other projects and ideas. Recently however, the three began talking about playing again, going back to basics - guitar, bass and drums; starting over again. They played their first gig in nearly two years at the Kilkenny Arts Festival alongside Dublin post-rockers Halves
