Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Ducham

Just like the artist in whose honor the band is named, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp likes to mess with the conventions of pop just as much as the Dadaist Duchamp liked to mess with the conventions of art. This Geneva-based, six-piece band (consisting of former members of Dog Faced Hermans, Spaceheads, Headache, CreveCoeur) crafts pop tunes, but not without tearing them apart through vocalist Liz's shriekings, erratic drum bangings, uncommon instruments, noise erruptions, … They fuse the wild and free attitude of post punk with tropical and afrobeat vibes. Blasting trombones, skillfully played marimba, screaming vocals, roaring guitars.

The Jimmy Cake

Large-scale post rock outfit with folk leanings and occasional forays into electro-acoustic soundscapes. The main players came together in the late 90’s as Das Madman, broke up in 1999 and reformed in 2000 as The Jimmy Cake. They have released three albums: ‘Brains’, ‘Dublin gone, everybody dead’ and 2008’s ‘Spectre & Crown’ as well as one EP: ‘Superlady’ on their own Pilatus imprint.

Fringilla Montifringilla

Fringilla Montifringilla are a band named after a small bird. That small bird is a bramling. The band stumbled clumsily into existence in late 2008 and comprises of members of Sylvan, Party Weirdo, The Jimmy Cake, Hands Up Who wants to die, Janey Mac, Nippons, Shlow and more. They could be described as Scruff pop, Wonk pop, Noise pop or clumsy neanderthals tripping over their own feet on stage but never Pop Punk or Math Pop because that would be shit.

Great night, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp were way better than i thought they were goin to be for some reason, like the soundtrack to some surrealism cartoon and good and hefty for the dancing, their guitarist should lay of the 70s stuff though. The Jimmy Cake & Fringilla Montifringil were also great, cant wait for the new Jimmy cake album, the new stuff is tip top. Anyways best craic ive had in the lower deck in years, thanks.

I thought that guitarist was completely brilliant! Real hermans/ Ex bang off him but with lots of deadly little mathy melodic bits that played off what everyone else was doing; my only complaint was that him was too quiet.

I was yakking with the drummer after who it turns out is actually currently doing a guitar duo thing with none other than Andy Kerr, formerly the life and soul of Nomeansno (note the steady decline post 0+2=1) which i thought was pretty great. Especially since Gw Sok has developed a habit of taking the stage with them...

Top night all round.
