Open Source Embroidery
An exhibition facilitated by Ele Carpenter

Open Source Embroidery explores the similarities between Open Source
software and the collaborative characteristics of needlework craft.
Ele Carpenter has been artist in residence at Access Space for July,
and will be running workshops throughout the Autumn. She quickly got
in touch with an unlikely mix of knitters, embroiderers and computer
programmers in Sheffield and around the world, inviting them to
contribute to a Html Patchwork.

The Html Patchwork is a collective project developed in response to
the popularity of quilting in Sheffield. The patchwork visualises the
216 hexadecimal web colour palette based on a hexagonal mouse mat,
consisting of web-safe colours and their six figure identification
codes. The final work will be a collectively stitched patchwork of
Html colours and embroidered codes represented on a website and as a
physical traditional quilt. Each hexagonal patch is personalised by
the sewer, creating a unique and distinctive quilt.

Access Space is an open access media lab using recycled computers and
free open source software. Anyone can drop in and use the lab to
develop their creative projects. The foyer has been transformed into
a design wall for the Patchwork. Here you can see the progress of the
quilt, view the website and make your contribution. Embroiderers,
patch-workers, knitters and computer programmers are invited to
monthly meetings at Access Space to make the final patches and stitch
the quilt together.

The Html Patchwork has been developed using a mixture of face to face
realtime meetings, usually over tea and biscuits, as well as through
internet discussion groups such as the Sheffield Forum. Ele has set
up Open Source Embroidery groups on Facebook, Flickr, and even writes
a blog documenting the project at www.eleweekend.blogspot.com. Pupils
Kurt Sullivan and Addison Smith from The City School, Sheffield
designed step by step instructions for making an Html patch on the
www.instructables.com website.

The exhibition will present the Html Patchwork as a work in progress,
alongside artworks by Ele Carpenter, Trevor Pitt, Clare Ruddock, John
Keenan, Lisa Wallbank, James Wallbank, and others. The exhibition
preview will feature live electronic embroidery sound performance by
Keith O’Faolain and Jake Harries.
