This is about the old bass player.

From the Star Ledger:

As an exotic dancer at Hott 22 in Union, Linda Kay's persona was that of a dark and ghoulish Goth girl.

In real life, police say, her interest in the macabre was more than just an act.

Officers responding to a report of a suicidal individual at Kay's South Plainfield home discovered a severed hand in a glass mason jar of formaldehyde and six skulls -- all human, according to the Middlesex County medical examiner.

Kay, 31, was arrested and charged with improper disposition of human remains. She has so far refused to tell police where or how she obtained the body parts.

The skulls, which authorities suspect were purchased online, were found in an upstairs bedroom, South Plainfield police Capt. Paul Brempt said. Linda's mother, Patricia Ann Kay, said her daughter purchased the skulls from a mail-order catalogue.

A man at the home yesterday, Jason Lafontaine, said Kay and Sean McDonough, who owned the house with Kay, got the hand from a friend who worked at a medical examiner's office.

Lafontaine said Kay called the hand "Freddy" and kept it on a dresser in her basement bedroom.

Andrea Leipow, who had stayed in the Diana Drive house for about two months earlier this year, heard that the hand came from a medical student.

"As a dancer, Linda had a lot of fans, and this med student who now lives in California gave her the hand," said Leipow, who said she left the home several months ago.

The condition of the hand suggested it had been cut off crudely, not surgically, according to a police report, which also noted there were bone fragments in the jar.

Police also arrested Polina Nickulina, 26, on charges unrelated to the hand. Authorities said she failed to appear in court on a weapons possession charge.

Nickulina, who lives with Kay, also performs with her at Hott 22, an all-nude juice bar on Route 22 West. Their stage names are Ada and Zilla.

"They almost look like twins. Sort of a new-style Gabor sisters," said Hot 22's owner, Daniel Russo, referring to the Hungarian television actresses from the 1950s and'60s.

Nickulina went on stage in a formal gown. Kay began each performance wearing dark, Goth-style outfits, complete with black eyeliner, piercings and tattoos. One tattoo was an upside-down 3 on the back of her neck.

Russo said she did not use skulls in her dance. Hott 22's attorney, Ira Weiner, said her performance was just that -- a performance.

"This is all her show, her stage persona," Weiner said. "Maybe she thought it was mystical, cool in some way. She is a lovely girl, and has never been violent towards anybody. I'd be surprised as anyone if she had any violence in her."

Assuming there is no foul play, the identity of the skulls will likely never be known. Most skeletons sold in the United States come from overseas, from the few countries that still allow legal export of human remains, according to Joey Williams, director of education at Oklahoma-based Skulls Unlimited.

Skulls Unlimited sells a human skull for anywhere from $350 to $750, depending on its condition.

"In overpopulated parts of the world, cemetery space is at a premium," Williams said. "There are companies that excavate skeletal remains and sell them to the medical community."

Williams said they also sell to museums, artists and people who "have a fascination for the macabre."

Kay was apparently one of those people. Her mother said her daughter has been drawn toward morbid things since she was a girl. She had a collection of animal skulls, including a Texas longhorn.

"She would find snake skeletons in our back yard," Patricia Ann Kay said. "That just was her. It's a fascination with the human body."

Patricia said she knew of her daughter's exotic dancing career, though she never watched her perform.

"She has a flair for the dramatic," she said. "I have never tried to stop my children from doing whatever they want. As long as they are happy, aren't hurting anyone, and it's keeping them out of the poor house."

A 1993 graduate of Scotch-Plains Fanwood High School, Kay's entry in the yearbook from her senior year is blank, the only blank entry on a page otherwise full of the usual remembrances, private jokes and song lyrics.

After high school, Kay enrolled at Rutgers University and majored in visual arts, but never completed her degree.

She and McDonough bought the home in South Plainfield five years ago for $290,000. Bouncers and dancers from Hott 22 were frequent visitors -- as were police, because of noise complaints.

"We got a big music system," Lafontaine said. "We hung out. We did karaoke."

Neighbors who refused to give their names said they often heard music, screaming or loud parties coming from the house at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning.

The house's most recent visit from the South Plainfield police came at 1:15 p.m. Friday, when they received a call that a man was inside, threatening to kill himself with a hammer.

But when officers got to the house, Brempt said, only Kay and Nickulina were inside the two-story house -- along with Kay's gruesome collectibles.

Kay was released from custody on $100,000 bail but could not be located for an interview. Nickulina was released pending a court hearing.
