On October 14 1989, a twenty five year musical journey began when three young Cork men plugged in their amps for their first live show at the renowned De Barra’s of Clonakilty. The audience were witnessing the kicking and screaming birth of The Frank & Walters and within a couple of years, the same band were signed to Setanta Records and splashed across the covers of the most influential UK music mags of the day.
Six studio albums later, The Frank & Walters have become one of Ireland’s most iconic bands; the purveyors of an endless stream of indie classics, they continue to electrify audiences with a live show that draws on an amazing back catalogue.
The Franks’ debut release was EP1 in 1991 and its lead track ‘Walters Trip’ became an instant hit. The follow-up EP2 was released soon after, before the band moved to Go! Discs and were partnered with producer Edwyn Collins to record the Happy Busman EP. They found success in the UK, and following a tour in support of Carter USM, an Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds) remix of ‘After All’ reached the Top 20 in the UK Singles Chart. The group also appeared on BBC’s flagship music show, Top of the Pops.
Following the release of the Indian Ocean EP and the Grand Parade album in 1997, the band relocated to New York and began work on what was eventually to become the very urban sounding Beauty Becomes More Than Life (1998). Further voyages of discovery saw the band explore electronica and Glass was released 2000. Setanta released a well-received Best Of in 2002 before the band returned to home shores and their natural sound with A Renewed Interest in Happiness (2006). The album was supported by a biography penned by their long-time friend and postman Irish Jack Lyons.
The band returned to the studio in August 2011 to work on a new album. The first single from this album, entitled ‘Indie Love Song’, was released on Valentine's Day, February 14 and was supported by Irish and UK tours.
The Franks’ sixth studio album was titled Greenwich Mean Time and released on March 2012. The album was extremely well received and supported by tours in Europe, the USA and Japan.
To mark twenty five years at the top table of indie royalty, The Frank & Walters are set to headline a special anniversary show at Cork Opera House during the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival. Ghosts of albums past are expected to appear on the night . . .
