There are worries in the consumer end of the games console market, but joy at the developers end. It has been revealed by CVG that the sony PS3, due for release later this year, will contain a sort of DRM, which will only allow brand new games to be played on the console, this measure will also mean that you can only play the game on the console it is first registered to, rendering the second hand game market for the device obsolete.

And this would work how, exactly? Central registratrion over the interweb? Anyone see a flaw in that one? Or will the disks be some sorft of bastardised write-once media?

Sounds implausible to me.

would they not work in the same manner as the operating systems cd's that microsoft ship now pete?
ie, when you install the operating system, you have 30 days to activate the product. if you do not activate the product, you cannot use it?
this method also means you can only use the cd once. the server 2003 cd's i've seen come into work recently are all like this,at least i think so anyway.......

Yeah but assuming not everyone who buys a PS3 will have it hooked up to the interweb, can you imagine the administrative overhead in running the call centres for that one, though? Top selling games sell way more than MS products - it's not unusual for big name console games to sell over a million copies in Japan alone.

fair point pete. but i can see this sort of thing creeping in everywhere all the same. but i'm sure the cracks for them will creep straight in afterwards!

I'm no boffin or scientician but it seems like there would be a way to do this without bothering the internerd. Could a random code be put on each copy of the game, you type it in when you first load the game and it is then 'linked' with your machine only?

But then, how would another PS3 know the game had already been played on a different machine without the internerd.........?

A conundrum worthy of Holmes! Or that kid in WarGames.

the only way it could be done is via the web or a call centre, and, as pete said, that would be a logistical nightmare. but where there's a will...................
