Note Productions present The Contemporaries Concert Series

VINCENT COURTOIS - SYLVIE COURVOISIER - ELLERY ESKELIN TRIO
Tuesday 12th May, John Field Room, National Concert Hall, Dublin

"Music can be magic and one listen to this group quickly reveals why." All About Jazz

Vincent Courtois (cello), Sylvie Courvoisier (piano), Ellery Eskelin (saxophone)

This imaginative and daring trio brings together the acclaimed Parisian cello virtuoso Vincent Courtois, the acclaimed ECM pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and one the most remarkable New York talents, saxophonist Ellery Eskelin. These three remarkable musicians form a brisk and lively trio remarkable for the depth of emotion, color and range of ideas it brings to its music.

Vincent Courtois has aligned himself with an impressive cast of musicians ranging from contemporary classical and jazz to chanson, ethnic and pop projects. He developed his work playing with the likes of Martial Solal, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Michel Petrucciani, Dave Holland, Dave Douglas, Louis Sclavis and Mark Feldman. He has released eight leader records to date including The Fitting Room and Translucide (Enja). Reaching out into unknown realms beyond jazz, classical and experimental regions, he offers an expansive musical vocabulary. Courtois' compositional and improvisational style transposes the rather starched formality of the European classical approach into a disarmingly groovy framework of advanced jazz aesthetics.

Sylvie Courvoisier is among today's most original and promising musicians and composers perhaps best known for her acclaimed ECM release, Abaton. Moving to New York she has quickly become a leading figure on the contemporary scene there playing and recording with John Zorn, Tim Berne, Joey Baron, Mark Feldman, Dave Douglas, Fred Frith among others. Her most recent release is the acclaimed Signs and Epigrams on John Zorm's Tzadik Records. A virtuosic pianist and daring composer, she has been influenced by modern classical composers like Ligeti, Varese, Schönberg, Schnittke or Takemitsu as well as such jazz pianists as Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk.

New York saxophonist Ellery Eskelin is arguably the most acclaimed and well-regarded saxophonist on that city's progressive jazz scene. Perhaps best known for trio Andrea Parkins and Jim Black, he has also worked extensively with drummer Joey Baron, drummer Gerry Hemingway, bassist Mark Helias as well as Dutch drummer Han Bennink. Eskelin's own projects as a leader have employed musicians such as Marc Ribot, Kenny Wolleson, Erik Friedlander, Mark Dresser, and Melvin Gibbs. Eskelin has garnered significant critical praise in the international jazz press and is recognized as "a major player in today's creative music" (Down Beat magazine). He has released over twenty recordings as a leader and has been named in Best of the Year critics' polls such as the New York Times, The Village Voice, DownBeat and other major jazz magazines in the U.S. and abroad.
