“Not Squares, quite simply, are the most exhilarating act to emerge from our prettier sister, Belfast, since Georgie Best started kicking an empty Bavaria can around an estate. In this age of instant iTouch gratification, their EP makes so simple an action as changing the tape to side B a second to salivate over. Taking the best bits from 23 Skidoo, and their bastard children Outhud and !!!, marrying them to grooves as liquid at the T-1000 in Terminator II, and throwing in some post-hardcore shoutalongs for good measure, the four-piece have arrived at a sound so polished Mr. Sheen could trim his moustache in it.”

“In all, an inspiring set that displays creativity and ability rarely found on these shores, and even at this early stage shows promise of a truly exciting record.” Alternative Ulster Magazine
Not Squares are a band from Belfast who combine language, sound and non-habitual movement in order to dance, shout and sing with you. Not Squares is nothing without you. Formed in January 2008, Not Squares draw upon their previous experience to create something fresh and original. Whilst their music has tangible reference points, the continual refining of ideas and limitless energy progresses them further than any one ‘style’. Despite this band’s youth, their reputation for incendiary live shows already precedes them.
They released a limited number of cassettes in October 2008.

Following on from their shows in October with Mahjongg (K Records) in Whelans, a show with Cap Pas Cap and a Richter Collective Show with Bats in December, Not Squares will be joined by another new Belfast act to play for the first time in Dublin:
Kicks Blue

“Managing the impressive feat of not sounding like a single other band in Northern Ireland, Kicks Blue take their cues from the forward-thinking likes of Animal Collective and Liars; Neu! and Faust. It’s minimalistic, experimental stuff, yet still managing to be strangely ‘pop’. Shimmering synths, thudding beats and vocal harmonies are the order of the day, and the live show promises to be deliciously different to the norm.” Alternative Ulster
Kicks Blue is Matt Green on vocals and programming and since November 2008 he has been ably assisted by the Kickettes (Kim & Ciara). Matt says: “Kicks Blue, a tiny neon stag, became an acquaintance some 6 months ago. His origin is unknown, I found him on the Isle of Arran (Scotland) grazing on sunbeams. Kicks’ wrote all the tunes you’ll hear – everything - all the soaring melodies, banging beats and glitchy rain showers. All the kickettes and I do is sing over the top. Kicks’ is the brain, we’re the brawn.”
