About Ninety Nine:
Ninety Nine are now on Trifekta Records - same label as superchunk, songs ohio, life without buildings, the go-betweens
"Hailing from Melbourne, Ninetynine combine indie rock stylings with tuned percussion and layerings of casio keyboard to create a unique kind of pop music. Variously described as ‘wonderful’ (Melody Maker) and ‘versatile and talented’ (Rolling Stone) the band originally began as a solo project for Laura MacFarlane (the original drummer for Sleater-Kinney) in 1995. Ninetynine's self titled debut on Patsy followed soon after as well as tours of the U.S., New Zealand and Europe. In 1997 long time collaborator Cameron Potts joined the band just in time to appear on the release of the ‘767’ album on Patsy. Further tours of North America and Europe occurred in 1999 and 2000 in which Ninetynine toured such countries including as the U.K., Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Canada, U.S., Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia and Finland. In 2000 Ninetynine released their third album ‘180 Degrees’ on Radio One and Patsy to local and overseas acclaim. The following year a rejuvenated line up appeared with Amy Clarke and Iain McIntyre coming in to assist on bass, vocals, guitar, keyboard and vibraphone. 2002 sees Ninetynine head into a 24 track studio for the first time with Lindsay Gravina at Birdland Studios (Magic Dirt, Rowland S. Howard). The result is their stunning new album ‘The Process’ which was released on Trifekta Records on September 16th 2002"

"When time came for local bill-add-ons Ninetynine to play lemon-sorbet and cleanse the palate, a whole buncha folk had t'make their way back into the Corner from the refuge they'd sought in the front-bar, trotting in in time to see the quartet deliver a set of emotionally-wrought, instrument-swapping percussive-punk; their doleful melodies thumped out on the skeletal frame of drums, vibraphone, xylophone and casio. Such songs -ranging from ragged new-wave numbers to long, doleful, innately-intense vibes/vocals numbers- are most often powered forward by animalistic drummer Cameron Potts, who's let off the leash long enough to grind drumsticks into stubs, batter his battered kit, and strike fear into unsuspecting audience members with wild-eyed screams."

But while incorporating these unusual instruments into indie rock are a good way to attract attention, Ninetynine's two gals and two guys take turns stunning you with melodic and moody droners and ridiculous poppy bits that would've been just as potent without the mallets and keys. Laura MacFarlane's voice carries several songs with a remarkable confidence, flooding the area with shimmering musical beauty. Ninetynine is entertaining without becoming intrusive, massaging your mind and tickling your senses."

ALL MUSIC GUIDE REVIEW Black Eyes self-titled debut displays a band with a hold on the experimental side of D.C. punk — a path paved by Fugazi and, particularly in this case, Q and Not U. This five-piece band takes dub, bass-driven grooves and kooky vocals of the Liars and Q and Not U's off-kilter dance punk and plays them grittier from the violent narrative of "Someone Has His Fingers Broken" to the oblique sexual politics of "A Pack of Wolves"....
This album will have to remain the a mark of a band's crazy potential and perhaps a warning siren of what is to come.

Their music focuses on Crash Worship-style cacophonous drum beats that throb along with throaty bass lines, making the songs feel like a slap on the back that is just a bit too hard. Sometimes evocative of Joy Division on PCP, sometimes of Arab on Radar on codeine, Ian MacKaye's production maintains the right balance of tin-can sounds with bullfrog disco stylings. Screeching guitars and sex vocals fill out the space on tracks like "Pack of Wolves" while dysfunctional disco drums chain a song like "Deformative" to the bedrock....
The music they are creating is pulsing, pounding and original. And in a live setting, it should inspire the slack-jawed yokels to dance -- a valuable commodity in today's world of hipster apathy."
