Is there a quicker way to burn mpeg/avi's etc without having to wait 1-3 hours for nero to transcode it?

Try and find a piece of software called neodvd. It's ridiculously fast at encoding mpeg files. BUT quality will suffer for that speed.

Other than that, they're all fairly slow unless you have a hardware card to do it in realtime.
