Four of Ireland’s top live acts have joined forces with Murphy’s stout and today, Wednesday 19th January, sees the launch of Murphy’s Live 2005 – the hottest new addition to Ireland’s music calendar! Murphy’s Live 2005 will present the best in up and coming Irish bands supporting Pony Club, Alphastates, The Frank and Walters and Fred at the Murphy’s Live gigs in March and April 2005.

Bands will be invited to send in their demos to be in with a chance to be part of the line-up before the closing date of 28th February 2005. A total of eight bands will be selected from the demos received to join the bill and support either one of the following; Pony Club at Eamon Doran’s, Dublin on 31st March, Alphastates at Geoffs, Waterford on 7th April, The Frank and Walters at Cyprus Avenue, Cork on 14th April, or Fred at The Granary, Killarney on 21st April.

Two bands will be selected for each gig by a panel of judges including representatives from some of Ireland’s best loved underground music radio shows, the managers for each of the headline bands and a representative from Murphy’s, to support the headlining band in each area. The chosen eight support bands will not only support Ireland’s greatest but will also receive music vouchers worth €500 and have their demo recorded onto a Murphy’s Live 2005 CD, which will be distributed at the gigs and sent to key music industry moguls. There is also the opportunity for one of the final eight to win €2,000 worth of studio recording time – every unsigned band’s dream!

Every band that enters will automatically receive the Murphy’s Band Survival Guide full of tips on how to break into the music scene from approaching A&R to recording a demo and getting their first record deal!

Speaking at the launch of Murphy’s Live 2005, Murphy’s Senior Brand Manager, Jennifer Cashman said, “We’re excited to be introducing a brand new event to the music calendar and especially one that gives aspiring bands the chance to break into the competitive Irish music scene. Murphy’s is delighted that so many of Ireland’s leading live acts are joining with us to support upcoming Irish musicians and perform in intimate music venues. The bands will also work with their support acts passing on their own advice on how best to prepare for a live gig! The Murphy’s Band Survival Guide is filled with tips for unsigned Irish bands, which we hope will make it easier for them to make it to the top. The Murphy’s Live gig in Cork will no doubt be a popular choice for music fans celebrating Cork’s status as European Capital of Culture 2005!”

They’ve appeared on the cover of NME, Hot Press and any other music magazine worth its salt and to this day The Frank and Walters remain one of the most accomplished and talented bands in Ireland with an enduring popularity and a number of timeless singles behind them. They had the following to say at the launch of Murphy’s Live 2005, “We’ve been out of action for a while but it’s great to be back on the road, the Murphy’s Live event appealled to us because it’s a win win situation – the punters get a free gig, younger bands get some great exposure and we get paid! Everyone’s happy in their nappy,
thanks Murphy’s.”

Pony Club released their second album “Family Business”, the follow-up to their highly acclaimed album “Home Truths”, in February 2004 and it has been hailed as ‘…gripping and moving…dynamic and tuneful’ by Q Magazine. Lead singer Mark Cullen acknowledged, “getting any kind of a leg up is difficult early on” adding, “I wish there were more events like this when we were starting out.”

Alphastates released their debut album in April 2004 creating a massive Irish following and are no strangers to major live perfromances having graced the stage at Oxygen in 2004 and played Witnness twice. Alphastates said, “This is a great opportunity for new bands, particularly since studio time is so expensive and beyond most band’s budgets when they’re starting out. We’ve some across some really good acts during last year touring around Ireland, the standard in this country is very high and no doubt some exciting new bands will be discovered!”

Fred will release their eagerly awaited new album “Making Music So You Don’t Have To” on 25th February and were an obvious choice as a headline act for Murphy’s Live given their renown for powerful and uplifting live performances. The band behind the extremely popular “Can’t Stop I’m Being Timed” album said, “It’s great to be considered in the same league as some of the most established and respected bands in Ireland. We have built a really good reputation as a talented, fun-loving band and we certainly intend to deliver a great show in Killarney. We will be supported by two up and coming local acts, it’s not too long ago that we were in that position and it’s a real bonus for us to help along and perform beside emerging talent!”
