Having just released 'Centralia', the best album of their career so far, Mountains are on a roll. With a nod to Terry Reilly, Eno, Popul Vuh & Harmonia but with their heads very much occupying their own vast & magnificent space, Mountains create slow-morphing textures to create an almost hauntingly immersive space for the listener.

With 7 albums now under their belts for the esteemed Thrill Jockey label, Koen Holtkamp and Brendon Anderegg have developed a masterful & compelling musical understanding which is thrillingly evident in their live sets, one of which you can catch in Twisted Pepper on May 9th with support from highly regarded Irish folk artist Mossy Nolan.

More on Mountains:

Mountains’ music is defined by slow builds, and subtle transformations, textures and melodic lines that evolve in a variety of ways to create grand soundscapes and acutely detailed compositions. For Centralia, the duo of Koen Holtkamp and Brendon Anderegg wrote and recorded in a way that mirrors the pace of their music. While the current trend in experimental music is towards hyper-prolificity, Mountains have taken their time on Centralia, resulting in an album that is as precise as it is boundless. Holtkamp and Anderegg approached the album layer by layer, throughout much of the record combining purely-acoustic recordings with purely- electronic sounds rather than using electronics to manipulate acoustic source material. Guitar, cello, organs, electric piano, and more are seamlessly combined with modular electronics, synthesizers and other sound sources. The result is a fully engrossing listen, always shifting focus between acoustic instruments, processed instruments and electronic sound.

Its not trad but its not folk either, a mix of rip-roaring delicately played instrumental compositions taking inspiration from all over Europe, together with drones, electronic sound scapes and spectacular vocals. Mossy Nolan's music has its roots in the folk and traditional realms for sure, but has the scope to reach a wider audience.

Having been tipped as one to watch in 2012 from a few well respected corners of the music press, the quality and execution of the self titled debut album really does deliver. It is comprised of elegantly crafted songs and tunes both original and traditional played
on Bouzouki and Mandolin. Colm McGowan's edgy style of guitar playing both acoustic and electronic adds dynamic all over the record and compliments the material beautifully.

The pair have been busy touring the album since its release in March 2012, with gigs at Whelans as part of the Trad/Folk festival, opening shows for Ronan O'Snodaigh (KILA) and Scottish folk legend John Faulkner as well as a debut appearance at Electric Picnic 2012.

"If we’re talking about being firmly rooted between the traditional and the modern, then no-one embodies that more perfectly than Mossy Nolan" Nialler9

He has appeared in session on "Radio Activity" and "The Small Hours" with Donal Dineen several times, and has played with established artists such as David Kitt as well as being part of the recording and touring band of one another one of Ireland's most exciting acts Lisa O’Neill. It is as a live performer Mossy really shows his true talent, captivating audiences with his older than his years voice and warm charming onstage persona.

"bursting with both charm and integrity" 2UIBestow

"this is an excellent debut album by Mossy Nolan, with a fine mixture of songs and tunes both old and new, played and sung with great skill and passion" Peter Crowley (FATEA)

Excellent! Centralia is great alright, a tenner's a bargain for this.
