If I have two tracks recorded and roughly mixed in pro tools who do I go to to get it mastered?

Also approximate cost etc would be great

i could put you in touch with a bunch of people in final year of audio college degree courses who'd prob do it for free!
and don't say "pfff students" well do if ya want, but consider the gesture unoffered if ya do

I mastered our last release, a Christmas single. It wasn't that hard. I dunno how good it sounds but I played it beside some other songs and it seemed to sound okay.

I 'master' stuff at home too, which is obviously a not really mastering in the strictist possible sense, but I can get a good level, clean it up a little here and there and slap it on out there

student thing sounds good, in so far as the worst that can happen is you get someone else to master it... best is you get a free mastering job

the basics of mastering should see a good tune through....

hiss reduction, normalisation and compression (but not too much, rms is evil if overused)

i tend to take out some hiss, then normalise, then compress (using a soft compression, gently reducing high volumes) and then re-normalise.... often there are a couple of rogue peaks that can be soften by zooming in and reducing them in a subtle fashion.... soundforge or wavlab do these jobs efficiently...

I use a stereo enhancer do-hicky to widen things out a little, it does amazing things with panned reverby elemets, really pulls them out of the mix...

"oh no, it won't sound good in mono!"

dude, it don't sound good anyway...

also a multiband compressor to try and get the bass and high end working across a few different headphones, speakers, different things like that and then..eh.. I think it's the ruby sound limiter set to soft overdrive too make up the level to around -6 on the peaks... eeeeehhhhh....

egg sent me this pm around them

egg
...and you should hear the botch job Mike did of the mastering... ...it's totally ruined it, has that man got empty crisp packets for ears... ...we should've got you to do it cause you are the best at everything... ...I don't care what you say Pantone, or how clever and handsome you are, this time I going to kick that guys ass...
