havent been in over a decade, but it would be amongst my favourite cities to visit. something a 'something for everyone' city, and certainly a while back not over touristed (in fact a large proportion of the tourists one might encounter were spanish).
the latter aspect may have changed..

I nearly booked there two weeks ago. still having a bit of a look at it

I was there a couple of years ago and stayed in the CR7 Pestana. Thats Ronaldo's hotel.

Great city. No one major thing to see, that I can recall, but interesting stuff everywhere.

the prado is the one big ticket highlight one-thing-you-must-see from a tourist standpoint.
but there's several lesser known museums Reina Sofia, Museo Naval, Archeology museum
Retiro park and botantic gardens
about a zillion ridiculously baroque churches

I absolutely love Madrid! It's the best place in Spain. I stayed opposite the telefonicas building..Europe's first sky scraper. Astounding work of art.

If it's warm go to the municipal pool in the park and get the cable car afterwards...it's pure 70s.

I was there last September for a couple of nights. There seems to be allot of theatre if you are anyway into musicals. The Prado is very cool and has some major Bosch works which attract a crowd. I presume the Spanish took them before being expelled by the Dutch. I actually only went to the national library see some small exhibitions that time which were free. There’s another museum a little out of town (still walkable) that houses pretty much all the stuff they brought back from Peru/mexico. I’ve gone to it but it was closed (museo de las americas or similar).

Problematic to say the least, but it’s supposed to be an incredible collection.

I'll pass all this on. I'm not actually going. My wife and her mates are. They usually go on art themed trips so I'm sure will hit all the galleries/museums mentioned.
