MUSICIANS HELP CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
With live acts Kíla and Ciara Considine, followed by top DJs till the early hours, The Spectrum Gig is a very special event to raise urgently needed funds for Saplings School for Children with Autism, Rathfarnham.
THE PEOPLE
Spectrum is being organised by HOT PRESS journalist Adrienne Murphy and her sister, Geraldine. Adrienne is well known in the media as an advocate for children with autism. Her son Caoimh was diagnosed with the disorder three years ago and is one of 24 children who attend Saplings School in Rathfarnham. As old friends of Adrienne’s, musicians Kila and Ciara Considine have witnessed at firsthand the immense struggle parents have trying to provide crucial early intervention for their children with autism. To help raise funds, Kila and Ciara Considine and her band are playing at Spectrum for free.
Spectrum is being hosted by the colourful Gavin Harte, TV presenter, musician, spokesperson on environmental and sustainability issues, and founder of Ireland’s first eco-village in Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary.
THE ISSUE
“The families of the 24 kids in Saplings have to raise €14,000 per month just to keep the school running,” says Colm O’Snodaigh of Kíla. “We’re all really happy to be part of this fundraiser, not only because it’s helping to pull in much-needed cash, but because it shows the huge number of people who genuinely care. Spectrum is an acknowledgement of people overcoming challenges – a celebration of kids with autism, their families, and the inspirational work that goes on in schools like Saplings.”
“Saplings has been a life-saver for my five-year-old nephew Caoimh and his family,” says Spectrum organiser, Geraldine Murphy. “The education Caoimh gets there is a lot more important than learning your ABCs. It’s teaching him how to communicate even though he can’t talk, to share in family life and relationships, and to cope with everyday situations – like going to his brother’s school concerts – that he’d find unbearably difficult otherwise.”
Caoimh’s dad, Dara Connolly says: “Caoimh used to be in a state of confusion, terror and frustration a lot of the time. He was incredibly frustrated and destructive and would often bite people. But with the help of Saplings, we’ve seen him blossom into a loving, gentle little boy who’s waking up to the world. Now he’s learning and developing all the time, and we’re really seeing his potential. I dread to think what would have happened to Caoimh without this very special education. It’s enabling him to live at home with the people who love him, instead of in residential care.”
