I used to work in a place that had TWO Palmarians. Mary was one, we used to call her 'Mary the Palmarian'. The 'rules' of their church are whack, long sleeve tops, can't watch tv/violent sports, can't celebrate birthdays. There's an eircom.net page out there with the list.

Good question. I've never studied cults but I'd imagine it's the basics - they bestow a sense of purpose and the community of nutjobs around you to re-enforce any irrational ideologies.

There must be a certain amount of money grabbing behind it but from what I know, they're not a huge cult.
