The reason given for declining to issue a certificate for the DVD, was the depiction of “acts of gross violence and cruelty towards humans”. Mr Zarchi commented: “It doesn’t surprise me that Ireland have decided to ban the film.

“It has relentlessly continued to shock and offend audiences since 1978 when it was first released, and it still does to this date.

“However, with the level of graphic violence and horror available these days, it’s surprising that IFCO sees this 1978 film as more offensive than some of the most daring and empty-of-content torture porn available today.”

and in tower they've a posh version with a book.

are these to be taken off the shelves now or is it just the re-release ?

still, its good publicity for the remake i suppose

This doesn't make sense seeing as the ISOYG dvd that is freely available in shops in ireland right now has the Irish film classification over 18's sticker on it. You know the blue one that usually ends up ruining packaging.

i think traditionally the Irish film censor / IFCO just copied whatever the BBFC did but in this case they've chosen to specifically ban (or rather, not classify) this version / release.

new broom and all that?

Its idiotic. Most of the time though Pete, where the UK classification is 15 the Irish sticker is 18.
Its insulting really.

good point - might just have been that way in the old days. i was in the old film censors office once about 12 years ago. they had a room where they kept all the banned stuff & they called the woman who looked after it "dirty mary" or something.

Weirdly enough - Ireland had no censorship on videos when they came out. When the British had the VRA in 1984 all the stuff they banned (Last House/SS Exprement camp/I Spit on your Grave etc) were all freely available here until be had out own video recoding act in 1989.

Wasn't this film actually shite?

Define SHITE...but yeah probably.

i always prefered Last House.

It does have some nostalgia for all those lates 80's kiddies who sat down and watch stuff like this and Cannibal Holocaust with the whole family after Dad rented ir from their Local Video Shop (which had a £50 membership fee :)

The DVD of I Spit On Your Grave that's available in HMV, Tower etc has seven minutes of cuts and substitutions.

AVOID.

The region 1 version is uncut.

Ferox's point re video nasties in Ireland - I was able to rent / watch that entire list during the 1984 - 1987 period.

I Spit In Your Grave is great - polarised audiences. Some men cheering the men, some women cheering the woman.

The one in Tower with the book is cut as well, all the copies you buy over the counter in Ireland have the aforementioned 7 minutes cut from them, the only dvd that's completely uncut is the American one.

I remember listening to The Last Word about a year ago when Antichrist came out and John Kelleher said that they are no longer a "censor" but a "classification board" and that their job was to ensure that films were classified correctly. His main point was that if someone decides to look at a film that's 18+ then it's their choice and as long as they are over 18 it's not up to him to tell them they can't. The new dude obviously is a giant step backwards.
