yo, my woman is doing a seminar paper about the return of Horror movies to the mainstream, likes of Saw, Hostel, Grindhouse blah

exploring themes in horror movies post 9/11, why horror genre has become so popular/mainstream following such an event.
issues of war/ fantasy-violence/ othering/ torture genre/ invasion/
who are presented as the victims/heroes/villans etc

compare with older horror movies which reflected vietnam/ mccarthyism/ conservative governance/ cold war/ whatever

anybody wanna suggest some good books / online resources?

yours,
anal rimarse

Book of the Dead is a very comprehensive history of zombie movies, published last year and bang up to date... Could be helpful.

If Chins Could Kill, albeit a good read will do nothing for your missusis thesis, even though he does talk about nineleven

Yep, already have The Book Of The Dead... good read

Thing is zombie movies arent exactly mainstream right now... Anna wants to focus more on the "torture" movies that seem to be so popular now... like hostel and shit like that

btw i should add that this is a sociology paper, not a film studies paper

there's a good kaufman essay on cannibal holocaust in that link i gave
which has been ripped off recently as 'welcome to the jungle'

i guess the remakes give her some scope for comparison - man the hills have eyes remake - all that wacko democrat / republican / american flag shit...

i wish i was writing this

See No Evil - it's a pretty comprehensive study on the video nasty era. Good for rererence..

Amazon link

Seduction of the gullible by MArtin Barker is another book on the same subject. Unfrotunally it's out of print but she might try the libararies.

Ill Effects: The Media/Violence Debate - An excellent and more academic book about (mostly) film violence in the Media. Great read.

Buy here

2 names for her to look for are Martin Barker and Guy Cumberbatch - you can get some of their articles for Journals online.

Unfortunally most of these are pre9/11 both will be usefull for reference.

I have a good few files on disk that I can email you.

might be worth referencing Wayne Coe

Wayne Coe said:
The paintings included in this show are "production art" for Hollywood's biggest event picture, AMERICAN HERO: THE 9/11 MOVIE. The semiotics of Hollywood manipulation - storyboards, effects shots, production stills, casting reference and theater lobby standees - are an effective way to talk about human desire in an age of decreasing contact with real experience.

Everyone I meet says, "You know they'll make a movie of 9/11!" But "they" already have. Was the camera that filmed the events of 9/11 the eye of God or the cynical eye of the devil? Was the camera impartial? And was the editor who said, 'cut to this victim or that missing building' an artist, journalist or propagandist? In media's hands horrific disaster turns to entertainment, victims to heroes, humiliation into patriotism - this is myths primal function.

Oh I forgot to mention Julian Petley who has done some great articles for academic journals..

Barker/Cumberbatch/Petley all approach their subject from the sociological/Physcological perspective - more about the impact and role of film and media rather than the medium itself...

Petley has an essay in The Spectacle of the Real: From Hollywood to “Reality TV” and Beyond - “Cannibal Holocaust and the Pornography of Death”...Might be worth a look. I haven't read the book but it's collection of pieces on post 9/11 media..

Torture films have always been kinda popular in Japan (ie stuff like Red Room/Flower and flesh and bllod etc) - so that might be worth looking at as the number of US made remakes of Japanese films continues.

That 'Censored: The Story Of Film Censorship In Britain' looks good - gonna pick up that one I think...

Thanks nlgbbbblth...

David Kerekes also did a good book called 'Killing for Culture' which gives a good inside into the Mondo film culture which really is a precursor (in a degree) to the voyeurism that is involved in the 'torture' films you mentioned. It's a couple of degrees of seperation but i read an article about Ruggero Deodato on the set on Hostel 2 talking about making a Cannibal Holocaust remake...

Tower used to sell that Killing For Culture and the other books in that series. Think they were around 15 or 16 others [Road movies, horror etc]. Don't see them much now.

That Tom Dewe Matthews book is decent. It was published in 1995, around the same time as BBC2's Forbidden Weekend - three days of [at the time] controversial films and little soundscreenbites of people talking about the first 'dodgy' film they saw. They broadcast the likes of Bad Taste, Performance, the uncut version of The Devils, Night Of The Living Dead etc.

There was also a two hour documentary about UK censorship broadcast to tie in with the other programmes. Matthews got interviewed in it.

I must convert it to DVD-R one of these days as it's worth keeping.

I got anbout 6 of that series in the old chapters fir a tenner each.

I think i have that Documentry - is it the EMpire of the Censors - or a similar title.
