I'm looking for lots of rawkus gypsy music.

like Taraf etc.

I'm also trying to find some good balkan/eastern european funeral music (original recordings instead of studio would be great...)

any names/links much appreciated..

Anything by Parno Graszt should placate your needs.

For more Romanian stuff similar to Taraf De Haidouks, try Mahala Rai Banda.

Goran Bregovic's 'Wedding & Funeral Music' might be of interest too. He rips off Saban Bahramovic so you should check out his 1970's recordings.

There's a series called "The Secret Museum of Mankind" on Yazoo records which you should really get your hands on. It's available online and off E-Bay stores still - possibly even in Claddagh...there are a few amazing examples of Balkan stuff there, gypsy violin groups from all over Eastern Europe too. All original field recordings from the early 20th century also...lots of hiss but don't let that put you off, the stuff on these cd's is fucking mind-blowing and this stuff sounds better the more ancient and crackly it is I reckon...adds so much atmosphere.

You can tune into "The Secret Museum of the Air" also here, archived and in real audio format - well worth recording:

There's some great albums of old balkan stuff available from Folkways also. If the LP is out of print, they'll do you up a cd (without the liner notes and cover unfortunately). What's more, most of their cd's are uploaded in sample format on the site so you can try before you buy.

ah yes. i forgot about the smithsonian folkways stuff. i only have their silk road compilation from a few years back..

nice one

bregovic rips off everyone, then copyrights it. bit of a pariah among the other balkan bands.

go see fanfare ciocarlia in dun laoire world culture fest this month.

Hmm. Not too sure. He made a deal with Bahramovic over copyright but the latter didn't get a cent...then Esma Redzepova claimed Bregovic stole some of her songs but a court ordered they were public domain in the first place. True his name is dirt among the Roma people but so is Kusturica's & both have done a lot to foster a positive image of that community.

Agreed re: Ciocarlai-saw them earlier this year-one of the best shows I've ever experienced.

the kronos quartet performs pieces by vrebalov, paredes, burman, rangel, perapaskero (featuring taraf de haidouks), seress, riley, troilo, kalhor, racy and roubanis. it has some frenetic moments, and some mellower ones also. all in all it's a superb collection, very diverse. also includes tabla master zakir hussain on one track.
