(20:13) The Garda Complaints Board has criticised rank and file Gardaí for a distinct lack of co-operation in the investigation into the Garda reaction to the Reclaim the Streets protest on the May Bank Holiday.

The Board said no Garda on duty on the day was able to identify any Garda in breach of discipline.

The Board's report also points out that of 150 letters which were sent to Gardaí on duty on the day it received only 20 replies.

The Board said that many members of the force were more loyal to colleagues than they were to the force and that some wrongdoers would go unpunished because of the lack of co-operation.

Garda complaints report critical of May Day riots

07:54 Tuesday November 19th 2002

The Garda Complaints Board has strongly criticised certain members of the force, for their non co-operation with the inquiry into the May Day riots in Dublin. Seven Gardai are facing charges of assault and up to 30 have been disciplined for not wearing identity tags. However others have escaped prosecution because other colleagues wouldn't identify them. The Board's Chairman, Gordon Holmes says there are up to eight Gardai who could not be formally identified, despite video evidence.

basically?

PJ Stone - they didn't cooperate with the investigation because they weren't obliged to. Fuck right or wrong.

David Hanley - rips him to pieces

Michael McDowell - won't be long now, sonny. Just you wait. Garda Inspectorate with powers to compel gardai to cooperate

Pj Stone - uh oh.

Michael McDowell - [monty burns]excellent[/monty burns]

sort of like that

The Garda Commissioner has strongly reacted to criticisms of the force's response to the Garda Complaints Board investigation into the May Day disturbances.

Pat Byrne insisted that members of the Gardaí would not ignore offences committed by their colleagues.

Quite.
