"a resonant filter sweep from the DSS-1 can put all but the mightiest analog synths to shame! It's an eight-voice polysynth with two oscillators per voice, and a unison mode that allows you to stack up all 16 oscillators
into one very phatt and powerful monosynth." some synth nerd
this synth sounds amazing, but where i'm living at the moment i just don't have the space (or the transport to bring it around). bizzare (and easy to use) digital interface but with real analogue filters.
i bought it last year from the original 1986 owner.he had it in his attic for years. he put a new floppy drive into it last year and it comes with around twenty sound disks and about ten blank ones for saving your own settings.
you can get anything from real dirty analogue bass sounds to car crash noises to true 80s guitar and string synth sounds. it also has two indepedent delays. great for building a sound vortex.
it's a bit strange in that it has no built in oscillators. you can either:
a-draw a waveform using the little dials.
b-use a sample.
c-use a saved waveform from a disc (square, sign etc).
d-harmonic synthesis by overlaying sine waves.
it takes about sixty seconds to load a disc, but once it's loaded you have access to 32 sounds (i.e. plenty for a gig).
it's in pretty good condition considering its age. the joystick, display and buttons all work perfect. the case has a few scrapes on the back. comes with original manual plus the repair book with full schematics. i just bought a moog sample disk for it last year aswell (so you can pretend you have a minimoog).
you just really need some space, cause it's a beast of a synth. quite heavy. metal case and proper analogue circuitry.
spec:
full midi
eight voices (with two oscillators per voice)
headphones + R/L jack out.
mic in (you can sample from it, but i haven't tried)
it's in donabate at the moment, but i should be able to get it into the city centre with some notice. looking for €250.
