[/FONT] Saboteurs have damaged large sections of France's high-speed railway network, further delaying services already hit by strike action, senior officials said today. The SNCF state railway executive, Guillaume Pepy, told the French radio station RTL that arsonists had destroyed cabling, preventing many trains from running.
Further "coordinated" attacks on the country's network had also led to serious delays to commuter services this morning.
In one instance, saboteurs started a large fire that damaged 18 miles of signalling on the western side of the network.

Rail workers have been striking for eight days

France's high-speed TGV rail network has been damaged by a "concerted campaign of sabotage", the SNCF state-owned rail operator has said.
It said acts of sabotage overnight, including fires, caused huge delays to TGV services already hit by a long transport union strike over reforms.
The SNCF blamed militants for the attacks, saying they wanted to harm negotiations to end the strike.
The talks between rail unions and the government opened on Wednesday.
In a statement, the SNCF said there had been "several acts" occurring "at the same time" on lines in the north, east and south-west of the country.
The worlds gone strike mad!

Why is France so angry?
Why is it’s government unable to act on public opinion and deal with it before it gets all mental as it so frequently does? Is it all completely spontaneous or what?
Why don’t we in Ireland fuck shit up more like they do?
Hmmm?

France is currently undergoing the sort of "rationalisation" that britain experienced under Thatcher in the 80s. If it's going to pan out the same way remains to be seen. I'd be highly skeptical about the supposed public support behind Sarkozy, especially considering how wide spread strikes are at the moment across so many different sections of society and different industries, types of workers. Civil servants, transport workers, engineers, students, etc. and spreading. It's opinion poll politics and doesn't say anything about the strike or reasons behind it, just that opinion polls show that this percentage supports sarkozy. What does that mean? It's a vaguery much like the slogan "we support our troops", which actually is quite useful for the government.

Protests in Universities are really spreading at the moment, with police being brought in in several universities to break up blockades and occupations.

“Everyone is asked their opinion about every detail in order to prevent them from having one about the totality.”
--Raoul Vaneigem

Good quote, but it's bollocks.
It might be true if all we ever voted on was current affairs (bin charges, cancer treatment, road deaths) instead of having elections which give a fairly reasonable indicator of everyone's total overall opinion. Abstaining is stating an overall opinion too you guyzez.

He had enough support to get himself voted in, didn't he?

He is a little bastard though. He has the demeanour of a night club bouncer, except he's too small. Maybe that's what happens to night club bouncers who don't meet the height requirement. They go into politics.

Yep. If you sample the right kind of people then you'll get the desired results. But at the same time, there were enough dumb fucks out there to get Sarkozy into power in the first place.

Just as Shorty said, this is much like the shit that went down in Britain in the 80's. It's a crude and general undermining of organised labour in order to keep France competitive within the Globalised Market Economy of flexible workers, rights, wages, factories, technologies etc...

Eejits the lot of yis, talking about the French Railway sabs.
Look at the title of the thread, the rest of us are talking about the Franch Raiway sabs.
Anyway, I find it rich that there's music fans giving out about all of this.
If France ends up like Britain in the 80s we'll have a resurgence of excellent pop music, but this time with even sexier ladies.

No, I think it's about that hit song "Franch Raiways" by the band 'Striking Saboteurs'

The French have a long history of striking, but many forget about the most defining French demonstration between the revolution and '68.
The French weren't too happy about the Germans pooling on their border back in 1940.
A general strike was called, they put their feet up and then what happened?

Sacré Bleu!

They called in scabs in the form of the Yanks to break up the picket lines and the rest, as they say, was history.
