“At a point where most bands or artists are well past their sell-by date, Damon & Naomi keep getting better and more interesting.” – Allmusic.com
“…the duo's literate, atmospheric music is sounding more prescient than ever.” - Pitchfork
“The whole album (Within these Walls) floats by in one long, luxuriously hazy sonic plume. Very, very lovely.” – Boomkat
“The ten songs gathered herein (Within these Walls) float by with gracious ease, draping gauzy melodies and ethereal vocals across languid rhythms and beautifully spare accompaniment.” – Other Music
“Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang have slowly, steadily, stealthily made themselves into one of the most consistently interesting cultural juggernauts on the contemporary scene. As musicians, their work has been carefully progressing for two decades, and their new album, Within These Walls (20/20/20) is thus far, their masterpiece.” - Arthur
Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang's music career started with modest goals but grew to incorporate one of the most influential bands of the 80s (Galaxie 500), a string of duo albums on Sub Pop records throughout the 90s, collaborations with some of the most adventurous rock musicians playing today (Ghost, Michio Kurihara, nmperign, Wayne Rogers), and more recently, the formation of their own record label (20/20/20) and subsequent release of their two Damon & Naomi albums, The Earth is Blue and Within These Walls.
In addition to their work as musicians, Damon & Naomi are the founders of Exact Change, a publishing house dedicated to avant-garde literature and artists' writings, through which they've issued works by such writers as Franz Kafka, Alfred Jarry, and Antonin Artaud. As individual artists, Damon writes and teaches poetry and music criticism, and Naomi is a visual artist and graphic designer.
In 2005, Damon & Naomi released The Earth Is Blue, an album that looked outward to all the places they had visited and cultures they experienced. The release was also a voyage in itself, marking their departure from a ten-year relationship with Sub Pop and the debut of their own record label, 20/20/20.
September 2007 saw the release of Within These Walls, undoubtedly their darkest record ever, filled with emotional songs and highly personal lyrics - Damon & Naomi explored the depths of the human condition, its pain and loss and tragedy balled up with the quiet beauty of existence. It is also their most elaborately orchestrated record. In the melancholic tradition of Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Scott Walker, and Leonard Cohen, Within These Walls uses strings and brass to embellish the loneliest of lyrics. Soprano saxophonist Bhob Rainey, known for his work with the experimental “lowercase” group nmperign, arranged the sophisticated horns and lush strings (played by cellist Helena Espvall of Espers, together with Vashti Bunyan’s touring string section). And after so many albums and tours together, it almost goes without saying that the “silent third member” of Damon & Naomi, Michio Kurihara (Ghost), contributed his skills as one of the world’s greatest electric guitar players throughout.
July 2008 will see the reissue of their first post-Galaxie 500 album, More Sad Hits. They've remastered the record and included new liner notes and photos in the package for the release on 20/20/20.
