Drop-D Cork gig March 6th (1 Viewer)

Laminate

Formed in early 2004, Laminate began as a two piece in a garage in Wexford town. It was this garage where founding members Derren Dempsey (formerly of Wilt and Halite) and Marc Hillis (formerly of Exit 4 and Blue Moose) had begun playing music over 7 years ago, in their first band Immodium. When Immodium called it a day, Marc spent some months in America, touring with Exit 4, while Derren went on to tour throughout Europe with Irish band Wilt. After a good year and a half touring away from each other, the two decided to hook up again. In the very same garage where it had all began for them, during a month off period from their respective bands, the two set up some amps and drums, for nothing more than to see what would happen.
Lee Byrne entered the fold fresh from his old band (Wexfords own, Sulk) and the three quickly began playing local shows. The band settled on the name LAMINATE. The band played support to bands such as Jetplane Landing, Hueman (ex Cyclefly), and Kerbdog on their Irish tour. They also spent time recording in Grouse Lodge (of Muse and Manic Street Preachers fame). The outcome, a three song demo, went on to sell out during the Kerbdog tour, and received an impressive 9 out of 10 review in England's well known Rock Sound magazine. The band quickly established a name for themselves on the backs of such gigs, as well as playing as many shows as they could. Laminate are a force to be reckoned with and will rock you to your bones.

Philtre

Tralee based rock act Philtre was formed in the summer of 2004 by two brothers Junior and Omar Abdulsalam, Tom Leahy and Padraig Dillane. They strived at great lengths to create their own distinctive sound centred on melodic riffing, aggressive vocals and addictive choruses and created their own blend of infectious alternative rock.
Since the band’s formation Philtre have gone from strength to strength making appearances at the Rose of Tralee festival winning “Live at the Rose” competition in August 2005. This enabled the band to record their debut EP “Bullet from nowhere".
Constant gigging saw Philtre sharing the stage with Republic of Loose at the Killarney Summer fest. Throughout 2005 also saw them play with Leya, Delorentos, Vesta Varo and The Flaws.
January 2006 brought the release of debut EP “Bullet from nowhere” with the headline track being featured on RTE’s “The Sunday Game”

February saw Philtre being selected as one of the best six unsigned acts in Ireland to Play on the Murphy’s Live 2006 showcase Philtre enjoyed great success at the Murphy’s Live with “Bullet from nowhere” Being nominated as one of the hit songs on the Murphy’s Live compilation. Philtre are currently through to the semi-final stage of this years Murphy’s Live and will play on the same stage as Duke Special. Much has been said about Philtre’s sound and it is recommended you catch them before the hit the big time!

Star Turtle

Alternative rock band Star Turtle from Dublin launched an EP in CrawDaddy in November 2005. The EP has some of the most melodic and angst ridden rock music that you will find anywhere, it’s quality is superb. No strangers to the big stage Star Turtle claim that no-one will be disappointed by their shows and promise to keep audiences well entertained; a fact backed up by their “best onstage banter” at the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival in 2006.
Star Turtle are Matt Walker (Vocals, Guitar) Gary Nixon (Drums) Jona Walker (Bass) Daragh Hoey (Guitar) And sometimes.... Becky Walker (Vocals).
