what's the best way to grow them out? im trying to grow a few of mine out but they keep dreading at the top. (i only have a few, not my whole head - which means sometimes my normal hair latches on and starts re-dreading the top). i dont wanna have to lop them off, just let 'em grow out. just wondering if anyone had any tips or something. thanks :)

You don't see a lot of dreads around anymore. There's a guy where I work (he's a student) and he has dreads. They look manky. I think dreads on white people always look filthy but almost universally cool on black people. Why is that? Am i being racialist?

well i dont know about growing them out but this website says
Removing dreadlocks
The easiest way to remove them is to cut them at the roots.
You can also soak them in a strong conditioner like VO5 and comb them out. Start at the tip (the end) of the dread lock and slowly work your way to the root. Try to get the conditioner inside the middle of the dread.

I think the VO5 conditioner is the best idea. It's the residue left in the hair from normal shampoos & conditioners that keep dreads from forming in the first place, so if you go back to washing with something that puts those residues back in, you might have a shot at getting rid of them.

It wouldn't untangle the dreads you already have, but I'd imagine it would keep the roots themselves from dreading. You could then just let the hair grow naturally, snipping off the dreaded parts gradually, until all that's left is normal hair.

Mind you , I haven't tried this--I'm in the process of growing dreads myself. But it sounds like it could work in theory.

Someone docked me rep for my thoughts on dreads. Thats fine but they then said in response to what I said that "it's better than walking around in your pants all day".

Now, mystery rep-docker, I don't know what you have heard about me, but I do NOT walk around in my pants all day.

Not ALL day.

this girl told me before that her hair was so fucked at the end with constant dying and manky dreads that she was just able to pull the fucking dreads out of her head. ouch!
