don seigel was a total legend... had a really mixed career but made some total classics

very few directors moved through genres the way he did

this has always been my favourite western, and definitely my favourite siegel movie... never was too much of a Wayne fan but this movie got it spot on

"Jinxed" is probably best forgotten though

any other fans?

Underrated director. The Shootist is an excellent western, possibly Wayne’s best performance apart from The Searchers.

My favourite film of his would be Charley Varrick, a rough-edged heist movie from 1973. Walther Matthau and Joe Don Baker are in it. I have more movies (61) from 1973 in my collection than other year.

Obviously the Eastwood flicks he did are deadly – Dirty Harry, Escape From Alcatraz, Coogan’s Bluff and The Beguiled.

A couple of his later works weren’t up to high standards but are still a cut above at lot of stuff of the time – The Black Windmill and Telefon spring to mind.

He also did The Killers, the one with Ronald Reagan’s last appearance and a super Lee Marvin showing. And the original Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.

The original body snatchers contains one of my all-time favourite images. Ever.

The Killers is an amazing movie. You could put Lee Marvin in just about anything and I'd love it.

That said, he did appear in some pretty dodgy films, presumably to pay the bills... but even these movies are worth seeing just for his appearances

it always amazes me that siegel made both Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and The Shootist... those movies couldnt be less alike, but both are classics.

Speaking of both Lee Marvin and John Wayne, has anybody ever seen Donovan's Reef?

Really warm, affectionate comedy of sorts directed by the legendary John Ford... highly recommended
