7 Albums behind them, recently nominated for no less than 5 grammys for their involvement with Gorillaz. De La Soul open ceremonies as part of Wrangler Wanted Weekender in Dublin next Thursday 4th October in Spirit.
Maseo, Posdnous & Dave have been a strong force in music since their debut in late 1988, they helped to change the sound of Hip Hop using unorthodox samples from the likes of Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Tom Petty, Serge Gainsbourg and many more. They have been cited more times than any in helping to push the hip hop genre beyond the limiting posturing and 'braggadoccio' ramblings the music is more commonly known for.
In their time they have collaborated with Chaka Khan, MF Doom, Maceo Parker, Mos Def, Teenage Fan Club, Ghostface Killah, A Tribe Called Quest and Jungle Brothers to name but a few. They plan on going back in the studio with Damon Alburn/Gorillaz early next year to record more material.
But this is not all, they are cited as being directlly responsible for the careers of artists like The Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, Common, Talib Kweli and Mos Def; all are currently the biggest urban stars in the world. De La Soul were one of the first bands in Hip hop along with The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy that crossed over into the mainstream immmedietely with their infectious samples and sublime rhyming.
