Dudes, just had to pay €32 on a box of records for customs or some shit. The whole thing, shipping included was only about €90. Anybody know how this works? Is it standard fee or is it over a third of the value of the package plus shipping. I never had to pay this before. It must be because it was sent UPS or somethin'. Any experience or advice out there?

yeah, if it's sent "legit" with all the correct labelling and the pricing on the little green sticker, then they can screw you for customs.

don't know what the percentage brackets for different products but i think there's a thread here somewhere with all the details.

i remember getting raped like that when my theremin came through years ago
pain in the fuckin hole, but i don't think there's much you can do abouts it

thats pretty shit.. i remeber looking it up on the revenue site and i think you can be charged for anything over €50 from outside the eu. if its from inside the eu you shouldnt have to pay anything. i got big orders before and luckily enough they have never been stopped. it appears to be pretty random.

If you get the seller to mark the items as "Gifts" or "used items" you should get away grand with it. That's good for ebay but if it's from a reputable American website or so, you'd have trouble getting them to mark stuff like that.

I have instructions somewhere on how to make a theremin fer cheap. Maybe I could rustle a few up, sell em online and re-coup my rapage costs. Any takers? You get much use out of that theremin? Do you pretend to be that Walter/Wendy person when using it? Have you made a cover album of 'Forbidden Planet' yet?
Yeah to theremins.

Just checked it. Clockwork Orange was the yoke I was thinking about.
The mist clears.

As the stupid american in this forum who has been screwed enough times sending stuff back and forth through the states.

Never let your package be mailed UPS, Fed Ex... Nothing but standard post, brown packaged.

Reason One:
UPS are notorious for overcharging packages (especially to Ireland)
UPS Hired trained monkey to compact your package into the smallest space available on their moving trucks.
UPS employees periodically examine packages that may be better off in their ownership.

(I worked for them while in college, horrible company)
Safest and least expensive way to ship around the world is standard post. It may take a bit longer but It gets there.

As for Customs...

That's between all of you and God... and Customs.

Still, 32 euro on a 90 euro package, that seems pretty high.

Have heard similar things said of UPS before re: people taking a liking to items in transit.
Also, the sender marked the box at minimal value so I'm stumped as to where customs got this €32 figure. To wit: "Attached to the actual package is a temporary invoice with lowered costs and no shipping costs, this is to reduce your customs charges."
Lesson to be learned: UPS aint nothin' to fck with.

I think alot of the €31 might be mostly a standard fee from customs for actually examining the package, processing the extra duty and other misc. admin costs etc.

I've had similar things happen in the past with pretty much any stuff shipped from the USA be it by post or ups or whatever.

Got a nice surprise the other day when something i had ordered from lik-sang.com arrived. I was fully expecting to have to pay customs duties on it because I always seem to get nabbed for it, but instead of shipping it from Hong Kong they shipped it from Lik-Sang GMBH in Germany. Which was nice.

And you wonder why most companies won't ship over here. I was going to send Rollerblades to my girlfriend in Cork, while I was still in Chicago and UPS wanted to charge my $170 to ship to Ireland, specifically 'Ireland'. I went to the post office and they charged $35.

Do the math on that?

And you wonder why the price of everything is so high. After paying off custums and any other middle man along the way... the end purchaser gets screwed.

But, you already know this.

Import VAT on all items is a standard 21% of commercial invoice + what every
duty that customs feel is applicable according to their very rigid tarriff codes. If you had have declared these as 'personal effects' rather than records you wouldn't have had to pay any extra - but run the risk of your records being seized for not matching the manifest description.
