------------------------------------------------------------------------

The year 2002 commenced for Conflict in April with the birth of our
'Gathering of the Thousands' festivals. This gathering was held at the
Astoria theatre in London in memory of Barry Horne the animal rights
activist who died in prison on hunger strike and proved an outstanding
success. In attendance were people not only from all corners of the UK, but
from most parts of Europe, the USA, Brazil and Japan completely filling
the venue to capacity as early as 8pm. We would like to take this
opportunity to apologise to the hundreds that unfortunately were unable to
gain admission and to send thanks to all the groups, organisations and
individuals who supported us in this venture. A very special thank-you
to Rob from Arkangel who organised and promoted the event in conjunction
with us. His tireless effort ensured success and raised a substantial
amount of money that launched the Barry Horne memorial fund. This fund,
a lasting tribute to that man, provides financial support to animal
rights campaigners throughout
the world. As ever fund raising and donations, no matter how small, are
urgently needed. To help, contact the Barry Horne memorial fund c/o
Arkangel BCM 9240 London WC 1N or www.arkangelweb.org This is also the
contact for those requesting assistance.

Thank-you also to Active Slaughter who, like ourselves took some stick
for appearing just before Conflict at this event. This was my decision,
not theirs and I stand by it. Truthfully I had become tired of wasting
my time on the petty squabbling that's been going on for years
regarding where groups think that they should appear on a line up at OUR
events. Sick of the egos I thought we were against - people barking on about
how big they are, or think they are. This is irrelevant - utter
rubbish. It's time to see who's who!! I devised a system that scored on two
fronts. The groups who sold most tickets supporting the event and
therefore raising money for the benefit, would get to play later on in the
day. Simple, fair and right. The results speak for themselves and I will
continue to adopt this policy at festivals in the future. Conflict have
also been heavily criticised for always appearing last - 'the main
attraction'. Again we ask, as we have in the past, for any group to offer
to appear after us at any eve
nt. We welcome this.

'The Gathering' has been documented for release on Mortarhate on DVD
and video containing footage of all groups, interviews, speakers and a
selection of the barbaric torture and systematic abuse of animals that,
disgustingly, still continues. Money from every sale of this release
will be transferred into the fund aiming at stopping this insanity.
Reactions before, during and after ' The Gathering' are documented in a
booklet included with the DVD release,
I would like also to say thankyou to Special Branch for the interest
and advice to 'behave ourselves' prior to the event and to the people
responsible for the telephoned bomb scare that the authorities decided to
inform us of after the event! A taste of our own medicine perhaps?!

The recording of the new Conflict album and Mortarhate releases ground
to a halt as Conflict took time out faced with probably the biggest
decision we will ever have to make. Should we finally accept a huge
financial offer to sign Conflict and sell Mortarhate to a major record
company? In all honesty, this time around, we painstakingly pondered over the
deal at length, rather than simply instantly dismissing the idea as we
have done in the past. Perhaps we wasted too much time, but we
considered very carefully and in detail what we could achieve with such
financial backing behind us. For instance we could instantly help a lot of
causes close to our hearts, especially the new Barry Horne fund. To cut a
long, boring story short, whilst realising that there is no real
independence in the music industry, we finally decided once and for all that
this route is just not for Conflict.

However, we also realised that certain things had to change if we were
to push forward and simply avoid disappearing. For instance, throughout
2002 Conflict refused payment for appearances accepting only expenses.
From now on we have to generate income from appearances in order to
operate efficiently. Conflict will not charge a set fee for appearances,
instead we offer to work in conjunction with organisers helping to
assure successful events and therefore earn the respective income. Conflict
will still appear at certain benefits but these also have to be
realistic, for example, at some that are already scheduled we are splitting
profits with organisations after costs. A system we believe to be fair
and that will work.

Conflict commence appearances this Saturday 22nd February taking part
in a low key festival at a London location which will be announced on
the day. This event will raise funds for an anti-war resource centre. To
find out the location please call the numbers in this newsletter after
3pm on the day or e-mail Colin now - you will receive a reply with the
information on Saturday.

'The Gathering of the Thousands 2003 Annual Reunion / Strength in Unity
festival' takes place on Sunday 27th April at the London Forum in
Kentish town. Again, the festival is an all day event with Conflict, Napalm

NEWS IN BRIEF

The situation with Go Kart records in New York is still unresolved.
Another year on and we are still awaiting the first accounts, promised
monthly two years ago. More importantly, the A.L.F. supporters group, who
are growing increasingly angry, have still not received a penny from
the Go Kart version of 'This is the ALF' benefit release. However, they
have received some copies to sell to raise funds, which we physically
took from their UK distributors.

In fairness to Go Kart, it was my intention if Conflict took the major
deal, to purchase all remaining Go Kart stock for destruction.
Destruction, sadly, is all the sub standard products are fit for - probably the
reason Go Kart are attempting to sell them off cheap to second hand
stores as we write. Conflict want to end this stand off and finally
disassociate ourselves from Go Kart and the type of releases the label
promotes.

We are at present negotiating with various USA companies to ensure
decent US representation - Mortarhate USA. Therefore, please continue to
support Conflict. do not purchase any conflict or Mortarhate re issues on
the Go Kart label. Thank you to all who have supported us on this
unfortunate issue. This solidarity shows record companies they can not do as
they please and shit on you!

Do you know that after the release of the last single 'Now You've Put
Your Foot In It', we were accused of sending gloating letters to the
relatives of farmers who had committed suicide? We were also accused of
helping to spread the foot and mouth disease and the Cuntryside Alliance
requested we keep our nose out of things we don't understand. Fuck off!
Then they actually threatened us by e-mail but I think may have been
rather surprised when our response was not from the pacifist group they
surmised us to be. In fact they soon backed off from the confrontation
they requested to take place at their ridiculous march in London.
Instead they informed the police to try and get restraining orders served on
us and went whinging to the press. Utter lowlife SCUM.

Do you know that Conflict do not support terrorism in any of its
disgusting forms? In fact we find it as contemptible as authority itself.

Did you know we have been accused of being communists? And racists?
Personally I find left wing politics despicable and do not support any of
the Socialist Worker Party's petty crusades. I also won't be told what
to do or say in the form of 'political correctness'. I am
anti-political and will say as I find without restriction. If that means I am racist
- then grow up!

Do you know that Conflict do not ask all to think or to act like us or
to adhere to all our views - only to think for yourselves and achieve
you own aims. This is the basis of freedom.
