I like programs, but I can't program.

I keep finding interesting apps that when I download have no installers and it's getting annoying. Does anyone know of a simple guide to compiling these apps, I need something that starts at the beginning because even the install readme files usually baffle me.

What OS is it? If it is linux then it should be easy to get a start on although you will probably run into lib compatability problems. If it is windows then you will need to set up the correct development tools. Each app can have different requirements. I've been able to build some in MS developer studio but others require more messing.

tis WinXP unfortunately, I just want ot know where to start really, people who put these programs online tend to assume that people downloading will be familiar with DOS commands and makefiles(???) and the like, I'd like to know where to begin with this stuff without requiring a time consuming programming-from scratch approach.

Well you shouldn't have to worry much about the makefiles other than they are mechanism from compiling all of the source code automatically.

The problems with windows is that different apps target different compilers so you really have to read through all the online documentation (if any) to find out. Give me an example of an app you have tried to compile.
