My lady friend is getting a new i-book, apple lap top thing tomorrow and we need broadband in the Evil Bandit house so can any of you net nerds advise which is the best to get.

It'll only be used for downloading music, the house is in Artane and has no phone line whatsever, we also have NTL digital if that makes any difference.

What I'm looking for is hopefully the cheapest but defo the one thats the best value for money.

Cheers.

I have Smart.35 eurals per month and you don't pay eircom at all.you do need a phone line tho!And you have to be inside the M50 to get Smart.. ibooks have wireless airport built in, so why not see if you can't get it from your neighbours signal first thats what I did at first. Otherwise, I think NTL do a package for tv annd internet but you mat have to pay eircom as well.

ntl would be the best bet i reckon, seeing as you have the service running to your gaff already. simple set up as well. ntl guy comes in, splices one end of your co-ax cable into two, one end goes back into your tv box, the other goes into a cable modem, which then goes via an ethernet cable into your pc. no software needed at all on the pc/laptop. if you wanna go wireless ntl will supply a wireless router, which plugs into the cable modem and is easy to set up.

Cheers Stee-sounds perfect but the only catch is NTL have said it'll be 6 months to a year before they can do it in my area!?!

Does it really cost e200 to get the phoneline reconnected?
And do I need to get eircom to reconnect the line before I get set up with Smart or UTV or East.....or will they take care of that?

not much you can do about ntl by the sounds of things johnny, except wait until they upgrade the cabling and hardware in your area.
but it sounds like your sorted if the link to the eircom free reconnect works for you. it doesn't for me...

the upload for the 2 meg at the moment is 200k.

i'd imagine it'll go up to around 500k for the 5meg but who knows. boards.ie is a good place for info about this.

i got a phone call from ntl around christmas saying that my modem needed to be replaced becuase of a speed upgrade. they called out and replaced it and when i asked the guy when it was kickin in he said feb or march.

theres some people who work for ntl on boards.ie and apparently the date is set at march 10.
