BODY & SOUL - SOLSTICE GATHERING

A CONTEMPORARY CELEBRATION OF AN AGE OLD TRADITION
JUNE 19th & 20th, 2010.

As the days get longer, the nights shorter, the weather warmer, Body & Soul Summer Solstice creeps closer. It is now 3 weeks to go for that very special trip into a mystical magical world of music, art, masquerade balls, holistic healing, wood fired bath tubs and much more, and now more additions which are sure to inspire.

Edinburgh cult indie folk rockers BROKEN RECORDS bring their astounding live show that has seen The Guardian declare them as ‘the UK’s answer to Arcade Fire -
purveyors of an epic, swirling, joyfully mysterious music’ in a 5 star review. The 7 piece combine their different musical backgrounds to create an eclectic sound that also envokes the baroque intense magic of The National. Having released their debut album ‘Until the Earth Begins to Part’ on the legendary 4AD label in 2009; a new album is due on the same label this Autumn. Such is the range of Broken Records’ musicianship; they’ve even been known to instigate impromptu ceilidhs at their gigs! A classic festival set awaits we think.

Australian urban roots 9-piece sensation BLUE KING BROWN play Ireland for the first time when they land to play the Body & Soul Solstice Gathering. led by singer, guitarist and percussionist Natalie Pa'apa'a; they are established festival favourites in their homeland and have also played festivals in USA, Canada, Japan in mainland Europe. Overseas acts who have seen them and been won over as big fans include Carlos Santana (who said ‘My favourite band right now… they are the voice of the street and the band of the future!’); Serj Tankian of System of a Down (who said ‘BKB are one of those unique truth-telling outfits in our business that defy time. Amazing musicians with apowerful message.") The powerhouse band that is BLUE KING BROWN bring their cross generational grooves and socially conscious sound to an equally socially conscious festival!

Kilkenny multi instrumentalist RSAG or Rarely Seen Above Ground will be familiar to Electric Picnickers having performed in 2008. RSAG’s first album received a Choice Music Prize nomination in 2009 and his second album entitled Be It Right Or Wrong is released on 11th June and B&S will be one of the first chances for fans to catch his new material.

‘Post rocker’ KATIE KIM should also be familiar to Picnickers having graced the Body & Soul stage there last year, the experimental and ethereal sounds of Katie’s music will be wafting through the leaves and boughs of the trees on Ballinlough Estate and she is certainly one to watch!

Get ready to wiggle to Cork dub groove band WIGGLE! They will be bringing their unique blend of psychedelic folk and electro dub to festival goers. They play a huge array of mystical instruments are they are sure to get you wiggling this summer.

‘Dubliner PATRICK KELLEHER released his debut album ‘You Look Cold’ in summer 2009 and his unique brand of electro-folk earned media accolades both at home (‘His layered approach in combining genres created something quite strange and yet quite beautiful’ State)and abroad (a 24 year old Dublinner with all of Joyce’s love for experimentation and all of Beckett’s restraint’ 8/10 NME). In truth the term ‘electro-folk’ doesn’t really go justice to the expansive range of musical genres his music produces – it also incorporates everything from goth to hiphop. Just go see him and you’ll understand!’

This is on top of previously announced acts Four Tet, Chk Chk Chk (!!!), Jape, Tunng, Kormac’s Big Band, Voice of the Seven Thunders, Crystal Fighters, Gaudi, Dr Alex Paterson.

With a handful of final names to be announced next week, the first Body & Soul Solstice Gathering is shaping up to be a special one.
