PERFORMING IN MAY

TONY ALLEN:

Tony Allen is the Nigerian-born drummer, composer and songwriter who, along with Fela Kuti, pioneered afrobeat music, a new blend of jazz and traditional African juju and highlife, in the mid-1960s. Tony learnt to play drums when he was a radio technician at about the age of 18. He has his own unique style, using his 4 limbs, not his whole body! He started to play jazz together with Fela in 1964. Fela and Tony continued to develop the afrobeat sound in 1969 when they went to USA and met many top black American musicians. Tony was not only Fela's lead drummer but also had the very important role of musical director of the band Fela Kuti & Africa 70. Many of their original vinyl recordings from the 1970s, such as Jealousy and Progress, No Accomodation for Lagos and No Discrimination, have been reissued on CD. Tony decided to leave Fela in the late 1970s. Later he moved to Europe where he collaborated with many top musicians like Manu Dibango, Ray Lema and Roy Ayers and spear-headed the successful NEPA (Never Expect Power Always) project. Indeed Tony features on Manu Dibango's Wakafrika CD. The amazing album Black Voices was released in 1999 and once again Tony records with many other top musicians. He wants to fuse afrobeat with modern music like funk, rock and hip-hop, hence he has been working with people like Doctor L for the recording Black Voices and they also both appear on Psycho On Da Bus.

He believes that, despite its complexity, afrobeat is gaining popularity. At present Tony often performs with his own band but also can still be found alongside Manu Dibango, for example, at The Barbican in London in April 2001. He is, without doubt, extraordinary, full of funky, groovy rhythms as well as outstanding, hard-hitting lyrics. Look out for his new CD, Home Cooking! Tony was one of the nominees for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards for 2003 in the Africa category. Described by Brian Enoas 'perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived'. In 2006, Tony Allen joined with Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, and Simon Tong as drummer for The Good, the Bad and the Queen and will feature on the forthcoming Groove Armada album.

MR SCRUFF:

A lot of things have happened since a young Andy Carthy started answering to the name Mr Scruff - making a name for himself under the shadow of Manchester's mid 90s club scene. Not only has he released three critically acclaimed albums, with countless tours and club events he has cemented his now legendary DJ status. This is a DJ that can sell out the 1600 capacity London Forum armed only with his records, some turntables and a few spare packets of teabags.

Scruff plays hip hop, funk, soul, jazz, latin, disco, afrobeat, house, electro, reggae, rhythm & blues, ska, in short, good, varied, soulful music! Given that he is a partner in the record shop, he's the first to get his mitts on all the dusty nuggets that he plays in clubs.

LOW B:

As one half of the DJ duo Hollertronix, Low B (formerly known as Low Budget) has been a part of Philly's nightlife and thriving DJ scene for the last five years. A product of hip hop's "golden age", Low B is all about maintaining the integrity of a true all-around DJ--by keeping dance floors packed with a flavourful mix that rep all genres. With hip hop and dance classics as his foundation, Low B's musical ammo spans from rock to reggae, Baltimore club to indie dance, disco to the dirty south, and everything in between.

AFRONOVA: Afronova are a Dublin based musician, DJ and artist collective. The club set varies from DJ sets to full live afrobeat show with dancers, African percussionists and singers, jazz musicians, turntablists and video artists.

BLISSCOTHEQUE :

Two lads from Dublin named SpeakerTreatz and Detboi In the studio we're a remix and production team - in the venue we're triple threat DJ rockers. Currently the only 3-J's – 3 x CDJ decks/2 x mixers – on the live circuit, we aim to join the dots between the classic smiley face euphoria of a club-night with the coiled sex and sinful glamour of a rock n roll concert. Ex-punks, ex-goths, ex-ravers, we signed up when the shiny new stomp of electropunk/discorock marched into Dublin and Galway (brought to Ireland by 110th St) four years ago.

The D.I.Y. punk sensibility we brought to our bootlegs and three deck live sets as x*rox has been mainlined into blisscotheque to provide a much dirter, bass-heavier, groove-locked pleasure shock, knowing as we do that you like to get dressed up, fucked up then tranced out on the floor to a rebel electro-throb with guitars, FX and filthy samples stamped all over it.

In 2006, blisscotheque took apart Soulwax' remix of Robbie Williams' Lovelight and put it back together as a rave-fuelled monster which has garnered local, national and international acclaim.
