Aidan Kelly - an introduction...

Aidan Kelly started DJing in 1989, playing local bars and clubs with a mix of well known and not so well known dance music, early sets were full of breaks inspired house by the likes of The Beatmasters, Reese and Santonio, Ska flavours by the Specials and The Beat, onto big vocal disco and garage house epitomised by Alison Limerick and Kym Syms. The early 90’s sounded like Joey Beltram, Adamski and the odd Prodigy track, but even early sets were always mixed up with classics from the funk and Soul era. James Brown, Jackie Wilson, The Supremes, Gloria Jones, Stevie Wonder. There was a sense of eclecticism to the music Kelly played right from the start.

Around 1996 two major events happened, he joined up with the Power FM crew and started a legendary Sunday show [Afternoon Tea, anyone?!] from 3 - 6 which seen a slight shift in his taste of music, things got calm and his shows for Power took on an experimental edge, he also started working at this time for Ri-Ra and took up a ten year residency there, particularly for Strictly Handbag a weird 80’s funk sound-clash, also guesting in New York, once in Japan, UK slots and regular guest appearances around Dublin city centre he quickly established a reputation for playing consistently good music. He later held residencies at HQ/Spirit with Soul Clinic and now for 5 years with Solas Bar and Bia Bar on Wexford Street and Stephen Street, he continues to play to appreciative crowds every weekend, and yes still keeping it Funky, unusual, surprising but still individual.

Aidan has DJed alongside household names such as Norman Jay, Moloko, The Sugarhill Gang, Trevor Nelson, Marshall Jefferson and supported Yazoo at their recent Dublin concert. You can catch Aidans 'Soundings' radio show every Sunday on Power 99.5 and online at: http://www.powerfm.org
