PRESS RELEASE :

An Taobh Tuathail Vol. III is the new compilation CD from cult underground music show An Taobh Tuathail (The Other Side) which celebrates ten years on the air this year. The 15 track compilation is once again compiled by mainman 'Cian Ó Cíobháin'.

In his own words Ó Cíobháin says: "The CD features torch songs from contemporary female vocalists such as Essie Jain and Roshi feat. Pars Radio. It also includes elegiac electronica from Gdsank-based composer Jacasek and The Caretaker, an artist currently residing in Berlin, whose explorations in music and memory have intrigued me. There's a beautiful song from Austin band Peter & The Wolf which has been played regularly on the show since its release in 2006, that I was eager to include and thankfully got the go-ahead to do so. Also, to have stellar songs from established artists like Animal Collective and Circlesquare on the disc means a lot to me. Closer to home, the CD includes tracks by Dublin's Rollers/Sparkers, Kilkenny's R.S.A.G. and Galway's Loner Deluxe and B-Movie Lightning.

B-Movie Lightning is Mike Smalle, previously of Cane 141 whose tracks were featured on the other two compilations. This is his début release under the new pseudonym. He played it at a party one night last year and bowled over everyone in the room: I asked him there and then if I could include it. I could rave about all the songs on the disc - how Mount Kimbie's magical dub-excursion was the first track played on the show in 2009, when I came back after Christmas, or how the Factory Kids tune came to be on the CD, because the composer, Tim Chaplin, listens to the show via satellite in Warwickshire and has regularly been sending me his songs since he stumbled upon the programme. But there are spatial limitations to this press release, so I'll let the disc speak for itself...".

An Taobh Tuathail is broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta Mon-Fri 23.00 - 01.00 www.rte.ie/rnag/antaobhtuathail.html

Rating: 3.5/5

A decade in, Ó Cíobháin's Raidió na Gaeltachta programme enjoys a loyal and eclectic audience who lap up the lo-fi and experimental. This third compilation features locals Roller/Sparkers, along with Animal Collective, R.S.A.G., Peter and the Wolf, and a bunch of other names that require a few Google searches. Mostly, it's a sleepy, introspective, late-night affair, and kudos to Ó Cíobháin for showcasing his selection skill, as it flows rather beautifully; prime example being the waiflike vocals in Essie Jain's 'Haze', to R.S.A.G.'s childlike tinkling on 'Dwelling on the Past'. As a gateway to unexposed Irish acts, as well as a few other gems, this is a delicate assortment of winter treats.

Award-winning DJ Cian O Ciobhain has been doing the state some service presenting his Raidio na Gaeltachta show An Taobh Tuathail for just over a decade now, and this downbeat and dubby ambient compilation is his third hand-picked selection of the best of contemporary global underground electronica.

You simply can’t fault the man’s taste – Circlesquare, Animal Collective and Peter & The Wolf blend brilliantly with The Caretaker, Miwon and Gdansk-based composer Jacaszek. Even more impressively, four of the 15 tracks featured are by Irish artists – Kilkenny’s R.S.A.G, Dublin’s Rollers/Sparkers and Galway’s Loner Deluxe and B-Movie Lightning (a.k.a. Cane 141’s Mike Smalle).

As with O Ciobhain’s two previous albums, this is an extremely well thought out compilation of truly sublime mood music. The post-Christmas comedown has been sorted. Maith an fear!

One of the most inspirational shows on Irish radio returns with its third and best compilation yet, blending, as only it knows how, a splendid selection of diverse tunes from artists such as Peter & The Wolf and Irish hero R.S.A.G.

It does the heart good to see Irish labels, DJs and producers upping the ante and producing fine music or, as in Cian O Ciobhain's case, compiling serious compilations. An Taobh Tuathail 3 mirrors the mood of his superb late night radio show and is awash with winsome torchsongs (Essie Jain), fuzzy lo-fi electronica (Miwon & Mount Kimbie) and glorious noughties pop from B-Movie Lightning. Like a familiar warm scarf on a cold winter's evening!

Cian Ó Cíobháin has been broadcasting the eclectic spread found on this compilation CD for over ten years now on his An Taobh Tuathail show on RTE in Ireland. It may be one of the best kept secrets in music.
Ó Cíobháin has put together a genre hopping collection to shame the broadcast output of most stations and DJs in this, the third such sampler for his show.
The common denominator is mellowness and this is definitely best listened to very late in the evening.
The mood is set with the opener, Loner Deluxe’s wintry instrumental Frozen Grass, complete with wind howling at the door and icy sounding glockenspiel. Other highlighlights include Rollers/Sparklers minimalist The Evening Station, the warped 60’s sci-fi theme sounding Loch Raven by Animal Collective and the bleak soundscape of False Memory Syndrome by The Caretaker.
All in all, as soothing a collection of music as you are likely to find, An Taobh Tuathail Vol III will be released in [the UK] February 2010.

ROAD RECORDS
The third in this wonderful series curated by the superb radio show on RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta. An Taobh Tuathail is presented by Cian O Ciobhain and he deals with some of the most beautiful laid back folk and electronic sounds for this hugely important late night show. The album features tracks from loner deluxe, roshi feat pars radio. Essie jain, rsag. Factory kids, b movie lightning, rollers sparkers, miwon, circlesquare, jacaszek, them use them, mount kimbie, the caretaker, animal collective and peter and the wolf. Not only is this a great introduction to the radio show but its also a truly superb collection of late night electronica, weird folk and mellow post rock.
