To tune individual notes? I'd consider anything man, but I don't think the pitching is the (fundamental) problem, I think it's ... well, the physics of my singing apparatus, y'know, the way I hold my throat and manage airflow through my larynx etc when I'm singing.

Or maybe you mean pitch-shifting down, then recording, then pitch-shifting back up? Hmmm. That might even things out a bit alright, had some success with that on a 4 track years and year ago I seem to remember
 
Using an effect to 'fix' your signing doesn't seem like a terribly good idea to me.

Now, using an effect as part of your vocal sound (e.g. detuned formanants a la The Knife) is perfectly acceptable and fun.
