I always get the impression this gentleman operates in the very shallow pool of Ming Flanagan-type ‘politics’, certainly going by the verbal diahorrea there?

Nope. No politics really at all, just very real depictions of Irish small-town life plus the deep inner thoughts of a very singular man. He's wildly inconsistent and the records are usually fairly badly produced but if you can handle the whole outsider-music buzz he's a really good songwriter with a really big heart. Know Your Station Gouger Nation!!! is nearly 20 years old now, good place to start in you're interested
