The end of the 1970s / early 80's was best ever era for popular music - in UK at least.
Look at the top 30 in the chart on that page.
Smash Hits was more left field then than NME in last few decades. It was only a short step from charts to the popular independent scene of Pop Group, Discharge, Venom, Tank, Crass, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire etc.
