What Book Did You Read Last Night??? (8 Viewers)

thats stronger than how I'd put it but I kind of agree. Its basically a book of (very) short stories interlinked by this zombie infestation.

that's what it's meant to be

he had some left over that came out as Closure Limited

Amazon product ASIN 0715642936
one of which should never have been published because

it introduces vampires to the story, which is just silly

On my third Margaret Atwood of the year.. and ever, so far.

This one is the first in a trilogy and is going well

Goat Mountain by David Vann. Father, son, grandfather and father’s friend Tom go on a hunting trip in California. They encounter a poacher and very bad things ensue. For fans of Cormac McCarthy.

The Blind Assassin is great. The other one I read was Handmaid's Tale, which gets praised a lot, but didn't couldn't quite grab me as much.
The girlfriend says the Handmaid's Tale is a good one to teach but not so much to read. Her favourite is Cats Eye. It's supposed to capture, uh, women... very well.

I read Alias Grace a couple of months back, it's the only one of hers I've read so far but I got the impression that it's a bit different from her usual style, it's a straight-up drama based on a historical murder story in 1840s Ontario. It was hard work to be honest, some patches of beautiful writing but the general tone was a bit like one of those misery porn hard upbringing stories. I'm interested to try her alternate history / sci-fi type stuff because I get the feeling that's more her signature style.

Can anyone recommend any books published this year that are worth a shot? I used to be more on top of my game, but haven't read anything new this year. My folks are buying me a bunch, maybe 4 or 5 books for Christmas, and want to make a list :)

Doesn't need to be this year, exactly, just newer stuff. Preferably not period or historical, or fantasy.

Reading David Cronenberg’s first novel, Consumed (see above). From what I can tell it started life as a film project but he couldn’t secure funding so he wrote a novel instead. It's vintage Cronenberg, all body horror, weird sex and tech paranoia, and his writing style is similar to JG Ballard, unsurprisingly. I’m enjoying it very much.

What about sci fi? This trilogy was published this year and is very very good.

The new Peter Carey one is getting good reviews, I might get that for Christmas.

I started Creation by Gore Vidal about 6 weeks ago and I'm only half way through even though it's very enjoyable and easy to read. Fucking internet.

I finished Creation eventually, it's a great read, although it kinda just went on for a good while and then stopped. I was hoping for a grand finale.

I started Inland by Gerald Murnane but gave it up after about 30 pages. Rubbish. And I had such high hopes.

I've just started Fathers & Crows by William Vollmann and I think it'll probably be the best thing ever.
