yeah man - i mean humans are pricks and all but it was the chinese who polluted their own river and fucked up its natural ecosystem. this is very sad news but.

we get pink dolphins out here, and the state of teh water ion some areas, i reckon it wont be long before they die out too. :(

anyway i have to correct myself, i didnt see the next page of teh story - apparently it wasnt just pollution that killed them off. but still. poor sods, their sonar systems were going wobbly cos of all the ships :(

i don't think it matters who's to blame. the fact is, this animal is gone.
 
Has anyone here read "Last Chance to See" by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine? It's an amazingly chilling book, and yet entertaining too. Highly recommend it.

Anyway, they went in search of the Yangtze River Dolphin as part of their travels.
 
if anything this just goes to show that we won't allow dolphins to stand in the way of progress. when are they gonna learn?

i read an article about discarded pet pythons growing to enormous sizes and killing everything in the florida everglades. pretty impressive.

there are some good darwin award stories about pet pythons getting hungry and havign their humans for dinner
 
Re-introduction of wolves has caused a big recovery of plant species (aspens and cottonwoods) that were in serious decline, which was having the knock-on effect of bad river erosion (because the plants weren't stabilising the riverbanks) ... the reason for it (they think) is elk are now afraid to browse in exposed places like riverbanks for fear of being attacked
