how much is a sensible step each time you stretch an ear peircing? only just started doing mine

Half a mm at a time till you get to about 5mm and then a 1mm at time.

Uhm, I went straight from a standard 1.6mm hole to 3.2mm and after a month went up 4mm. After that went up 1mm at a time and after 6mm jumped up to 2mm at a time.

It really depends Barney. If you feel your ear can take the stress then there should be no reason to go 1mm at a time; it's painful but it might be grand. But if you feel that would be too much stress for your ear tissue then go up half a mm at a time. It really depends from person to person, you gotta draw your own line.
