Straight Edge article in the Irish Times today? (1 Viewer)

I feel like locking this thread because it has retarded arguments on both sides. Though the last page or so is made up of others just going "awful thread, cop on lads" etc

But at least my post had lyrics slagging off hardline. Right? Right? Ah ...

Since this is a history-making thread, I should be counted and make a contribution:

"It's [straight-edge] a worthwhile pursuit for those who chose it, just as other ways are valid for those that chose different approaches. Drugs and alcohol have had undeniable disciples – Charles Bukowski wouldn't have been Bukowski, Keith Moon wouldn't have been Keith Moon, Jimi Hendrix wouldn't have been Hendrix, etc., if they hadn't answered to the beat of their own altered-states drummer. Think of it another way: the world wouldn't have the White Album if everyone in The Beatles was straight edge – can you imagine that? "
- Dave Smalley, in interview

A pointless quote that proves nothing about straight-edge at all, or brings anything to the argument... but thought I throw it in anyway.

I just like attention basically.

i think it's quite pointless for Smalley to even say that. Maybe he started drinking to see the light and become a genius like Hendrix?

regardless if someone drinks, takes drugs or not - they do have that talent within them. I personally agree that drugs had nothing to do with it.

K to the motherfucking O.

There you go.Even Ian MacKaye,the posterboy of SXE has started circulating videos of himself,impersonating SIR Ben Kingsley 'doing' an Ian MacKaye for the laugh in his own gaff.With his mates.And he looks locked.Its sad.

LONG LIVE MINOR THREAT!

I beg to differ.
Cypress Hill could not have written 'hits from the bong' without taking hits from the bong.
Likewise, Dr Dre couldn't have written 'the chronic' without smoking the chronic.
;)

Great contributions to late-Twenthieth Century culture, a fact no one can deny...

Not entirely on the point either, but I like the Bill Hicks statement, if just as a witty polemic:
that if you're anti-drugs go home now and burn all your records, because the history of rock-n-roll wouldn't exist without various kinds of intoxication along the way.

To balance out my last two posts, an anti-drinking ramble:
All that said, now that I live abroad, I've noticed that the Irish attitude to drinking is way off the scale, and looking back at my own trail of destruction over the last 12 or so years, I am considering the semi-straight-edge lifestyle:
no more getting really locked ever again (exemption: while trapped in family occasions);
having a drink for the enjoyment of the (good-quality) beer or wine is OK, rather then just to get drunk;
tell everyone about my attitude to drink as if it means something (this post is a good start);
yes to oral sex on the first date.

The first two (the serious ones) I think even a slightly-alcoholic person like me can handle... as long as they stay outside Ireland. Something I noticed when back, outside central Dublin at least, was there is nowhere to socialise, or even go read a book on your own, that is not a pub. I think the best thing that could have happened to Ireland was if they let that cafe-bar licence law in a few years ago. The only alternatives down the country (after six) are resteraunts (you can't just go have a coffee/a single drink) or take-aways (hideous).
Fuck Irish pubs: fuck their expensiveness, fuck their cultural monopoly, fuck their arrogance.

Maybe I'm just turning into a cantankerous bastard in my old(er) age.
I'll take it to Lifestyle...

Well if they are writing songs about drugs, well the obviously they're gonna have to experience what they are sining about.
Anyway Conor you know I couldn't give a monkeys shit about that stuff, ha, ha.
I would rather read Burroughs etc talk about drugs, than listen to some band going on about them

Ah man theres great fucking pubs in Berlin.Check out the Drink Devil in Kreutsberg.Mad rock'n'roll boozer next door to where the kebab was invented.Heaven.Plus you can score all manner of madness outside the train station over the road.Hell yeah.Irelands a kip in comparison.

Ah man theres great fucking pubs in Berlin....Irelands a kip in comparison.

there sure is Gaz... there sure is...

best thing is the beer in them is €2-3.
and that's not the cheap shite, that's the Weissbeer (I'm a man of quality).
let's not even talk about supermarket prices.
in berlin, the beer flows in the streets (quite literally outside Warschauer S-Bahn station ...where the younger alcho-punks hang out and beg, and the older alcho-punks sleep all day)

that said, even in Berlin with its drink and drug culture, there are late night alternatives to the straight-forward bar.

Its a great town alright.I spent the one of the happiest months of my life on a bender there.But I'll agree though,you don't have to be lamped to have a great time there.

I hope your joking. Taking the moderator role a bit seriously are we?

No way, there's always the local GAA club like.
