Do you have house insurance ? How much for and who with ? Any outstanding offers you've come across ?

I found fbd.ie to be the cheapest. And their policy is very cool - I was burgled having left the back door open and the alarm off (!) and they still reimbursed me... Phew!

do you want to insure your house, or the contents of your house?

Content only insurance (if you're renting) is pretty cheap. Insuring the whole house is more expensive.

if it's building insurance, remember that you want to insure the reinstatement cost, not the market value

if it's contents, make sure to check with the insurer which (if any) high value items need to be individually noted on the policy

I'm in the mood for some home contents insurance. I'm renting, but I can't find a policy on the web anyway that would insure items regularly leaving the property, i.e. my bike, laptop and camera. 'Cos, y'know, anyone who rents is some kind of primordial pondscum anyway. Anyone know anyone who does that? The other thing is I have to keep my bike in the flat because if I keep it in the bike lock-up it'll get nicked, and apparently it's my fault, not the management company's. Pricks.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'm just looking to insure contents for now (by contents, I mean my vinyl ! And some kitchen equipment...not much else of value.) But I'll look into insuring on the re-instatement value of the house also (ta Pete).
I was with Quinn for a year but didn't do any shopping around at all so I'm faced with a bewildering array of possibilities...

I had Quinn for a year too and it cost €100 and covered you up to €10,000 which I thought was great value. It depends on the size/location of your gaff of course.

However, I quizzed them when I went to renew it about what proof they need that I actually had all the stuff I was claiming for in the event of a claim. They said I didn't even need receipts if it was under a certain value (€1,000) I think. I found this hard to believe so I didn't bother getting insurance. Now i'm uninsured. hmmmm. Logic factor?

My camera and laptop are insured on my parent's cover.
Though the laptop now has a market value of minus €1000.

It's pretty much the only way to go.

I have no idea how to insure a bicycle.
