Questions for those you with a heavy online presence.

What happens to all of these things if you die? Have you thought about it? Made arrangements with a mate or family member to go and clean this stuff up? Do you know people online - and only online - who wouldn't find out if you died? Does this bother you? Have you made a list of them?

Would you be cool with your blog or flickr or myspace or whatever just sort of hanging there, no entries beyond the day you died? What if it became a sort of online memorial as so many of them do? Is that healthy?

It's for an article I'm working on. Morbid, I know. New ground, though.

Difficult enough for relatives to deal with the mobile, now this.

Well, since I am reliably informed by one of those "when will you die" online tests that I will live to be 92... and I have no intention of being an octogenarian myspacer I imagine I'll have taken them all down long before I die.

You never know. I've nearly died by mistake a couple of times.

i think about this now and again....like would yr virtual buddies who you've never met know you were dead? then again would they care!?! (delete from friends!) seriously tho, its weird.

It is. A mate of mine gave her mother a list of names, email addresses, MSN nicknames etc to be contacted in the event of her death. For people, and they're out there, who spend almost as much time socialising online as they do in the real world, it's got to be something to think about.

Suppose in years to come, it'll become more so, get worked into wills etc.

And I know 20 years is a lifetime in web terms, and blogs and suchlike might be long gone by then, but when that amount of time has gone by there could be hundreds of thousands of myspace pages, blogs etc just frozen in time with pics of the now decomposed larking around in healthier times, arranging nights out, talking about reality TV etc. Creepy, fascinating, historical document? All of the above really.
