Tomorrow week on Bank Holiday Saturday, July 31st, Neuromantek & Psychonavigation jointly present an Ai Records showcase featuring

FZV (live)
YELLOTONE (live)
+ support DJs

in The Sugar Club, 8 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2. Doors are at 8pm,
and it's only a tenner in before 10pm (15 euro after that--Sugar Club
policy, not our choice).

The two will also be doing a live in-store appearance in Tower Records
(Wicklow Street, Dublin 2) on the same day at 3pm.

Hope to see you at both.

* FZV

Originally a classically-trained violinist, Richard D Herbert became
disaffected with the timbral range of the instrument and moved (via
the electric guitar) to the more flexible medium of electronics.
Named for an MS-DOS file generated when you dump sample data from a
Casio FZ-series sampler onto a PC, but don't let this put you off!

His early recordings, using tape loops and guitar effects, at the
start of the '90s were influenced by the likes of Coil, SPK and
:zoviet*france:. Following his acquisition of an Atari STE, he has
progressed to sequencer-based electronica, techno and drum'n'bass, all
the while retaining some of his early industrial influences.

* Praise for the album "Precedent" (Ron Scheper, Absorb Magazine, May
2004):

Quickly now. Name the artist known for superb Warp-styled IDM,
industrial machine beats, and track titles like "Iso_r2", "Amlgm2" and
"Col Modulus". Of course, the answer's obviously FZV. Even a cursory
listen confirms that "Precedent", the first full-length from FZV
(Richard Herbert) on the superb Ai Records label, aligns itself with
the "Artificial Intelligence" era of drum machines and analog synths
popularized by Aphex Twin, Bola, and Autechre.

* Praise for the EP "Enclosure" (www.boomkat.com):

Ai's latest discovery, showcasing a harder strain of the acid virus,
suggesting sounds and directions still to be explored by this
much-admired young label. FZV's "Big Dark Room" was one of the
highlights of the "New Town" compilation, and here the man returns to
throw disciplines from techno, breaks, electro and acid into the
blender to deliver five tracks of dark electronic vision. Simple
reverbed vocal samples and subtle noises all combine with the main
ingredients to deliver an ace finish to the far-reaching attitude of
this EP.

* YELLOTONE

One of Ai's leading and most prolific artists, Yellotone is well known
from repeated airplay by Donal Dineen in his late-hour slot on Today
FM. As well as appearing on various Ai compilations, he has released
several lovely ambient but danceable EPs on the label, including the
well-known "Geen Mayo" (Ai 004). Yellotone (real name Simon Harding)
plays his own guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, and is influenced by
a diverse range of artists, producing a light-hearted brew from a
minty selection of home-grown samples. His first album was known only
by its catalogue number "CD1", but despite the name, this low-fi
collection scored an Ibiza anthem in "Mumra" and hits in "When We
Danced" and "In Flight Owl".

* Praise for the "Geen Mayo" EP (Sam at www.tesselate.co.uk)

"Morning Buns" entices you in with a lovely, ever-so-slightly fuzzy
guitar chord strumming away; the hissy drumbeat joins in and then the
bassline erupts. You know a track is going to be a classic when your
head nods by itself.

Imagine sitting aboard a robot transport vehicle, and the droid next
to you has "Morning Buns" playing on his internal sound system. As
you lean over to get a better earful, the sounds of the vehicle's
treads bashing on the metallic road create a ticky drumbeat to
accompany the track. Lasers flow over the transporter, scanning for
viruses, and sparkle off the circuit boards filling the air with a
spangly liquid cloud of audio beauty. Unluckily, you arrive at your
destination and head off to work. Amazing track.

The title track "Geen Mayo" bangs into action, dropping huge bombs of
bass and leaving holes in its path. The percussion is as smooth as a
human eye and the bassline has a very classic electronic feel.
Another guitar line joins in, and once again works so well, twanging
away over the dampened subby undertones. A more rampant chordy beat
comes into play at the end, taking the track into the sunshine-enabled
waiting room at Ai Substation B. Just excellent.

Ai records have a deal with the devil, or something along those lines,
because every release is killer, and this is no exception. Yellotone
brings another element to the Ai fold, using beautiul guitar lines and
chilled percussion, creating tracks that are nothing short of classic.
Insanely good label, insanely good artist--that's all there is to be said.
