Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

See, if we did a few Thumped song clubs, we could put together some lyric booklets so that everyone could join in. It'd be deadly. I'd say the eirecore folks would be especially trad-tastic.

EDIT: Shaney, I'm really into this idea now. But don't worry, some shiny thing will come along and distract me soon enough.

see this is whats wrong with this whole business - people joining in. its all about bawling drunkenly along to republican battle songs or songs about working mens heroes about james connolly and feeling part of the righteous pack of underdogs. i dont want any punks singing along with me when its my turn. i will pick a tune with a melody so strong that it could be hummed without words but there will be words and i'll sing them humbly from the corner in my strong clear tenor and they will touch the heart of each person in a unique way regardless of politics.

wageslave, i'd say you'd be a good singer. you should stop trimming the beard.

Ah, take out the 'strong clear tenor' and put in 'rich alto' and that's pretty much my fantasy, too. Sadly, my reality is that I get out of the shower and Mr Jane goes, "Wow, that's the most annoying thing you've ever done." Sigh. Someday, Shaney, someday.

Oh I don't know about that.

I'm not trimming the beard as much now - its a bit longer on the chin which is nice. Mind you I was out for my birthday a while ago and met a Pakistani friend of a friend who started laughing at me and told me I looked like a Taliban! !ninjaaaa

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

Get this sorted Jane. I haven't sung My Little Armalite in years. :D

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

The Red Flag was written by an Irishman (I'm sure ye all know that but I thought I'd mention it), Jim Connell. There's a great song called Labour's Call by Peadar Kearney that you can download in .MP2 format here.

did you see eamonn gilmore and co singing the red flag at the labour party convention recently? my father was horrified and said he'd have to discuss it with willie penrose (westmeath labour td) before voting for him again.

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

There's loads of socialist ballads. James Connolly himself wrote a bookful, almost, http://www.wcml.org.uk/people/jamesc2.htm

And Dominic Behan, Brendan's brother, was a major song write. (He wrote The Patriot Game, McAlpine's Fusilers, Avondale, Come out ye black and tans, and Famine Song for example.) And he wrote literally a book full of songs, most of them socialist tinged. I have it somewhere, its called Ireland Sings or Songs of Ireland or Songs of Irish Struggle or something like that.

And then there's all the songs like springhill mining disaster, joe hill (an anarchist by the by), there's loads of wobblie songs sung in ireland.

Interestingly, here's on for george orwell, in the woody guthrie song about Sacco and Vanzetti there's a line "'Anarchist bastards' was the name the judge he gave these two fine men." Because the judge, before the jury was out, said they were anarchist bastards and he'd put them down. (They were anarchists.) But in the version sung in ireland and sung by christy moore, the line changes to "'Communist bastards' was the name the judge he gave these two fine men." Wiping the fact that Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists from history. And also making the song factually inaccurate.

Ooooooh. How sinister.

ive heard christy and andy irvine both sing it with the words "anarchist bastards"

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

Was it O'Duffy who supposedly came back with more men than he went to Spain with. Some of the Irish lads on the other side said Eff this and went home with them or something to that effect.

some of them refused to fight the basques because they connected the basque struggle to the irish one and went home.

and some were killed by the nationalists (franco's lot) because they had the wrong colour clothes on.

classic.

I'd heard about that, that they'd officially adopted the Red Flag as their song. A bit of a peculiar move in 2007.

What was their stance on abotrion?

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

This week I've been mainly listening to Andy Irvine. He has a lot of lefty/labour songs. I have a middling collection of similar such songs by Seeger, McColl, Christy Moore etc. Anyone recommend any songs/albums in this vein? Even though they can be clunky, I love how alot of the songs tell specific stories of people and their deeds. Sometimes scans like McGonagle poetry though.

Das Nugs just told me that Sóivéidí na hÉireann (The Soviets of Ireland) is on tonight at half 9 on TG4.

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

That was interesting. A bit of a hack job though. There be Bolsheviks in TG4.

Hey,

It's the 90th anniversary of the Limerick Soviet. There's a commemoration for it on in Limerick with guided walks and talks etc from Liam Cahill and Dr Lysaght O' Connor, who both wrote books on the period.

you can download Liam Cahills book from www.limericksoviet.com and Lysaght's book is on www.limericksoviet90.com

I'm heading up on Saturday for a seminar on it given by Liam Cahill and a few others, it should be pretty interesting, i'm also doing a bit of a project on it at the moment so that's a nice coincidence.

All the details are on http://www.limericksoviet90.com/

It's amazing, the way the workers movement has been completly sidelined in all our beloved history books...mostly in favour of the nationalist struggle.

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

I really wish they'd get the Liam Cahill book reprinted, it's a great book but I hated reading it in the .doc format. There's about a billion copies of the DR O'Connor Lysaght pamphlet around too.

I didn't know about any of these events until now which is shit as I'd have gone to them but I'll try head to that talk in the Hunt Museum on Saturday. There's also a permenant exhibition on Limerick Soviet material in the Limerick Museum thanks to Jim Kemmy rescuing most of the stuff from it.

I did a big 60 odd page project on this tihng back in 4th year, must go see if I can find it..

Are you repeating the leaving? If your doing your history research project I can give you a copy of my own project to use if you want (i want to keep the original myself)

Yup i'm repeating the leaving. If it's no bother it'd be amazing if i could get a copy of your project, even just for general interest.

My project only has to be about 2,000 words so it's not a HUGE project....more of an in-depth inquisitive essay really. It's really interesting though, i've been doing a lot of reading about James Conolly and the ITGWU in my own personal time too. It's a pity so much of it is largely forgotten about in the mainstream.

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

Yeah I condensed my larger project (not the best as it was done in 4th year but I'm proud of it) down to a more manageable essay length for the Research thing. Hard copies of the Limerick Soviet book are going for $500 on Amazon at the moment..

Re: The Irish Workers' Republican, Atheist, Birth Control, Civil and Industrial Emanc

hehehe, i saw that. im hoping to nab as many as i can tomorrow and sell them to fund my third level education.

If you're going tomorrow give me a PM and we can meet up sure and i can also pay you for the tapes/record!
