The Contemporaries Concert Series
The Gavin Bryars Ensemble
May 2004 sees contemporary classical composer Gavin Bryars brings his Ensemble to Christchurch Cathedral for their first Irish performance. Highlighted by The Irish Times as one of the cultural highpoints of the year and featuring the World Permieres of new work in his 8 Irish Madrigals series this is a much-anticipated concert.
One of the key icons of European modern music, Gavin Bryars came to attention in 1975 with his first major work, The Sinking of the Titanic released on Brian Eno’s Point label. He followed with the renowned Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet featuring Tom Waits. Selling some three million copies worldwide the piece changed the face and nature of contemporary music.
Bryars’ music draws on his minimalist training with John Cage and the ambient influences of Brian Eno. One of the great composers at work today, his music is marked by its emotional power. From the looped singing of a homeless man on Jesus Blood to the stunning soprano of Anna Friman on the cycle of love poems, Adnan Songbook (which will be featured at the Dublin concert), his is a deeply humanist modern music, at once iconoclastic and emotionally charged.
Over the years Bryars’ has written work for the Hilliard Ensemble, and worked with the Balanescu Quartet, BBC Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera and jazz artists such as Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell. Indeed his work has developed to include numerous operas such as a new Medea for theatre maverick Robert Wilson at The Paris Opera and Doctor Ox’s Experiment with a libretto by Blake Morrison. He has also written vocal works for the Hilliard Ensemble.
From his early collaborations with US minimalists John Cage and Cornelius Cardew, Gavin Bryars has emerged as one of the most innovative European composers of the last 30 years. At his forthcoming Dublin concert, his Ensemble, including the celebrated sopranos Anna Friman and John Potter (Hilliard Ensemble), will perform a programme of his most important recent work.
Special guest for the evening is arguably Ireland’s leading traditional singer Iarla O’Loinaird. Lead vocalist of The Afrocelts, Iarla will perform unaccompanied pieces from his solo albums, Seven Steps to Mercy and I Could Read The Sky both of which are released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label.
