BILGEPUMP
RETCONNED
ESTEL
THE TEMPLE, DORSET STREET, DUBLIN
FRIDAY 19TH JULY 2002
7euros

Bilgepump hail from Leeds 6, UK and feature an
all-star line-up with members of some of the Uk's
finest; Red Monkey, Polaris, Snail Racing, Propulsion
Family Picnic, De Capo and Fat-Cat recording artists
H.I.M [who also share June of 44 members]. The 3-piece
use chaotic jazz drumming with some of the tightest
stop start knee jerk rhythms you'll ever hear along
with spoken/ shouted vocals ran through a telephone
receiver mic coming off like a mix of the Fall,
Shellac and Beefhearts' Magic Band.
While in the past they were lined up for an ill-fated
Greyslate Records [home of Redneck Manifesto] vinyl
appearance they are now set to release their debut
album on Gringo Records.

Retconned is one man from Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Coming from the ashes of the legendary post-hardcore
band, the Hal Al Shedad [who played a memorable gig
here a few years ago] and Ultivac, with a new sound.
Utilising digital and analogue instruments and effects
Retconned manage the most unique New wave style
electronic noise, in the vein of Suicide, Men's
Recovery Project and maybe even hints of Throbbing
Gristle. And if that wasn't enough, the show will be
accompanied by a live light/projection show to add to
the experience even more.

Estel having already played a few dates with Bilgepump
on their UK tour, will be looking forward to sharing
the stage once more. With their first record in two
years soon to be released, Estel are at their best yet
as recent live shows have proven.

ESTEL RECORD RELEASE GIG
With Very Special Guests: Daemien Frost & Uptown Raquette Club
WHELANS. WEXFORD ST. DUBLIN.
SATURDAY. 27TH JULY 2002
DOORS 8.30 ADM. ?8
Having been elevated to cult status with the selling
out of their first seven-inch in a matter of weeks
from one record shop in Dublin, and the high acclaim
and many accolades that accompanied their debut album
released in 2000, now comes the eagerly awaited first
release of the new Estel line-up.
The record being available for the first time at this
gig and released on the bands own Little Plastic Tapes
label.
Grounded in this city's long-standing hardcore scene,
the same creative environment that has given birth to
contemporaries such as The Redneck Manifesto and Joan
of Arse, have since the first LP been involved in a
veritable cornucopia of activity, touring Ireland and
the UK helping define their unique sound even more and
experimented with new approaches, adding more
instruments and many more influences while continuing
to be one of Irelands most quintessential,
idiosyncratic and intriguing music makers at the
moment!
Plans are underway for an appearance on the esteemed
Road Relish series alongside Joan of Arse, a split
with Australian experimentalists 'Ninety Nine' with a
tour of the UK and Iceland to coincide and another
split with Belfast's Somedaysbetter, before starting
on album number two.

but, here's some more about Retconned
mp3's of all his stuff on http://www.retconned.com
i particularly like the "walking in on your parents having sex." bit.

RETCONNED
Retconned played its first show on New Years eve 1997. The last Retconned show probably won't be for some time. It's hard for a one man act to break up. Yes, Retconned is just one person; so is Debbi Gibson; so is Gil Scott-Heron.

I write pop songs, but pop songs in the most detuned and seditious sense. My music combines a rhythmic minimalism with the noises that the machines around us make when they're trying to tell us they love us. Sort of the top of the pops for a fractured and irradiated world that we might or might not already occupy. Try it, you might like it, and then you might start to worry.

Retconned music has been described as sounding intensely foreign, and compared to " walking in on your parents having sex." In spite of these more extreme characterizations, Retconned music is not any more ahead of its time than people who watch TV and listen to the radio at the same time.

reviews:
"Bizarre electronic tinkering meets whiny no-wavey vocals. Retconned call on the legacies of bands such as Suicide to update the principle of electro-punk-the sound of an unstable human against an inorganic backdrop carries a threat that has gone undelivered by the likes of Alec Empire. Somewhere between Men's Recovery Project, Subpoena the Past, and Nitzer Ebb, Retconned nests in the wiring." (George Chen, Zum)

Though no-wave may be an archaic term brandished by grizzled, Trouser Press Record Guide-carrying record-store clerks, it's been a goddamn long time since someone's tapped the spirit of the Contortions and MARS like Retconned's debut album, Simulant Skin Included, does. Essentially the brainchild of one Jonathan Lukens, Retconned is a study in pu(ni)shing the limits of one man's sequencer, every duckwalking beat skipping around inhumanly in the most deliberate of fashions, every sinister bass tone incessantly bombing one's threshold, every tweeting keyboard note one-upping the bass tones by beaming out of nowhere at the most inopportune moments, Lukens all the while neuroticizing like an acid-fried prophet, his lyrics as much mini-manifestos as they are confessions... Headache-inducing to some and, to others (this writer included), pure neurotic bliss, Simulant Skin Included nevertheless is a compelling dose of unfettered nervous energy." (Baron Von Birk, Detours)

Atlanta's Retconned follow-up last year's seven-inch with this oddball disc. Bleeps, whistles, and damaging low-end abuse share the limelight in what can best describe as a hybrid of Thrones, Men's Recovery Project and, perhaps, Suicide. Kind of disconcerting, but I found it growing on me with each repeated listen. Interesting lyrics, too. Masked in abstraction and metaphor, I sense Retconned's subtle, budding subversion of not only the alternative rock audience but of Western civilization as a whole. But maybe I'm reading too much into this. I'd recommend seeing for yourself." (JL, Skyscraper #7)
